Programmer or Gears

Here's a quick question:

Assume I'm running 275/285/65/18's on the truck, which of the following two options would perform better theoretically???:

Stock 3.73:1 rear and Programmer

OR

4.10:1 setup without the Programmer

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know there's a third option of both but let's not go there just yet.

Me....

I'm more of a Jeep guy, and just use the truck to tow a trailer, but in general, a gear change will keep the engine in the proper power band for the given speed. I don't know about the speed sensor on the Ford yet as I havne't dug into the drive tain, but if there is a tone ring in the differential, then your going to need a programmer anyway.

programmer.

you have to regear 2 axles...and that can get real expensive...like $2,000 or so.

a programmer will be $400 and net your 15-30 ponies. custom programming will be roughly $500, but you'll get 30-40 ponies

btw, if you do gears, IMO you should step it up to 4.56 gears. that way you can run bigger tires, and still have the performance.

4.10 are nice, but 4.56 are tire smoking fun
