Quick ? on Installing a Tachometer...?

Hi all, I was thinking of installing a couple of guages to monitor the engine while driving and wanted to include a tach...I'm running a 12v. system with the 239 Y, '55 Merc. dizzy with pertronics conversion instead of points...
Is it possible to run a tach. from this setup?

I would think any 12V tach should work as the tach usually picks up the signal from the coil and the conversion should not make any difference.

Yep,

The electric tachs will work fine. On my 51, I have a 12V 390 with an MSD Drop and drive distributor - same thing no points.

Do you still have a coil? On mine, the tach connects to the coil, to a power source, interior lights (for light at night) and ground. If you don't have a coil, then I'm sure your ignition package would provide some sort of "plug in" for a tach.

Hi , Yep...I have a coil so the hookup sounds like it will be fine. The last tach I set up was on an old CJ-5 running an MSD with a dedicated tach wire. So now IO guess I only have to find a tach that works on a v-8...I would like to fine an old ford unit vs. just buying something new off the shelf. I also want to install an amp guage(I already hjave it). When I get the guages I can start work on a dash console that matches my shift console.

It should be pretty easy. There are a lot of nice new ones that match pretty well and look cool. Just be sure if you get an old one, it's not so old that it is cable driven. You need a special distributor to use those. I'm not sure how they work but I believe, (not sure) that they are not dependent on whether you have a 6 of 8 cyl. But, not 100% on that. The one I bought was good for either.

Is you ammeter the kind that has posts to hook it up, of just an induction loop on the back?

Have fun!
