Why poop brown?

My 77 F150 that I'm currently doing a frame-off on was Dark Brown Metallic from the factory and I did not think it was a bad color. The paint on the truck was in such bad shape and trucked needed much body work, so I plan to totally strip and repaint the entire truck. I thought about repainting the truck the original color, but I was finding it hard to get excited about painting the truck dark brown even though I thought the color was OK. I finally decided to go with Ford's Dark Forest Green Metallic paint. I have only painted the interior, firewall, and bottom of the truck so far and I'm hoping to paint the rest or the truck in the spring/summer.

I think those old colors are the coolest. Even the names- parrot orange, rangoon red, medium ginger glow (poop brown), and my favorite, baytree green. Sorry, I'm biased. I was thinking about tracing the gerber baby food logo on some cut out yourself decal stuff for my window 'cause my truck reminds me of that puke pea mush in the jar.

These colors were the "hip" colors of the times, not just in trucks and cars but in fashion clothes for men and women, furniture, household items like table cloths. bed sheets, draperies, etc........This is the late 70's and early 80's best colors. Dark brown was a very popular color during this time. They even made some brown refrigerators!
How do the manufacturers choose what colors they will paint their vehicles?
Have you ever noticed they will paint a lot of vehicles a certain color, then the next year they don't even offer that color even though it sold good. Jeep colors are the most trendy.
Manufacturers always offer white, black, silver and some tone of red but after that they go by the "International Color Forecast" to paint vehicles to match the fashion industry. PromoStyle is one of the companys that the automakers use to choose color. They work several years in advance to predict what fashion trends in colors will be. Right now they will be working on the colors for 2012 trucks and cars. Sometimes its a hit or miss.
Just wait till pastels come back in style!

I bought my first '79 F100 when I was 17, it was dark metallic brown with metallic gold in the middle. When I first bought it, I thought it was the ugliest color combo ever. Then I buffed and waxed it and took it out in the sun... Man, that paint really glistened. The mettallic really caught the sun and set it off. Got many compliments on the color after that.
My current '79 is Light Medium Pine (mint green) with Oxford white in the center. Again when I bought it I planned to repaint it a different color, but after I few months and tons of compliments on the color combo, I've grown to love it. You definately don't see those colors anymore, and it really sets the truck apart when you're out cruising away.
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I think I like the odd color combos the best simply because they are unique.
