Question Oil Change Question

I used to be a regular member on here, but since moving not only twice but also across the country I forgot my old login name and password. So anyway

I have about 68,000 miles on my truck. Since buying the truck brand new I've always replaced all the fluids with Ford Motorcraft stuff. I change my oil every 5,000-6,000 miles. Does anyone have any recommendations as far as if there's anything better (maybe a little cheaper?) or should I stick to Motorcraft oil?

Thanks
-Eddie

Motorcraft is very good oil and should perform just fine in your PSD. You can pick it up at Walmart pretty darn cheap too.

Nice choice on your front bumper!

I get Delo from Costco for about $56 for 6 gallons, about the best I've seen in Hawaii.

Hey Eddie, welcome back. I have about 14,000 more miles than you, but am considering going to Rotella 5-40 synthetic after I use up my Costco special Delo 15-40. There seems to be a lot of strong feeling on here that there are many benefits to switching, so you might consider that also.

We have been running our work trucks on rotella T. I plan on switching both PSDs over in the near future. Rotella T has been reccomended by several diesel shops, and truck drivers. Just my $.02.

I run Shell Rotella T 5W-40. I change filter every 5,000, oil every 20,000. Have so since brand new. I have 198,000 miles to date. Significant savings that way. We have sent the oil away for testing a couple times and no correction was needed. Oil stays looking real clean. Try it!

Way too many experts disagree with this. This is a recipe to become intimate with your dealership service department. Most folks with bypass filters do not go past 10k because of the shear effect on the oil viscosity. Many folks set the limit at 7500 - even with synthetic. Then there is the fuel dilution, the soot, etc - too many problems can come from extending the OCI.

Glad you have so many miles on the engine, but in a previous post you alluded to them not being trouble free.

Look up Beachbumcook's posts and see he has apprx. 140k "TROUBLEFREE" miles. He has a far more conservative idea on oil (and preventative maintenance). I am in total agreement with his philosophy of frequent OCI and the use synthetic.

Oh, we have had problems, but these problems are not related to oil. We are on the 2nd turbo, head gasket, fuel thickem, all related to a chip I had installed new. Chip is gone and has been gone for 106,000 miles. Turbo has the same miles and the head gasket has 66K on it. Trouble free so far. Where's wood when I need to knock on it!! I consider myself lucky after hearing/reading about some of the horror stories.

Yes, what I am doing most people don't agree with. But, with the amount of miles I put on, it seems worth it to me. Like I said in my last thread, I'll keep you guys posted.

I had my oil changed at the dealer for $59. This year he wanted $99. So I went to WalMart and got Rotella Synthetic and a motorcraft filter. Changed it myself.

I do it every year. I only have 19k on my 05 Ex so milage is not the issue. I have noticed that the synthetic runs better at start up than the dino oil.

BTW, if it's a penny for your thoughts and you put your 2 cents in then where does the other penny go?

I switched to Syn 5-40 Rotella last month to try it out for the winter. The truck definitly starts easier on these winter mournings.

We'll see about this weekend, we're supposed to have a high of 5 on Sunday and a high of -7 on Monday !

Must be due to the global warming !
