i have an 03 6.0 and was wondering should i run a diff oil? i run 15-40 rottela in it and since it got cold it blew the oil rails off the head from starting it cold. should i run a lower viscosity oil like 5-40 or something?

I would use a synthetic 5w-40, like Rotella T, year round. How cold has it been?
wow i'm amazed that it would even fire if the oil was that stiff, mine never did. did you do something like rev it right after it fired or something else. how cold, at -25 degrees celcius mine wouldn't fire unless it was plugged in until i changed to 5w30 syn.
Just bought 16qt of Rotella T 5w-40 synthetic and motorcraft filter. The nice folks at advanced auto parts told me that mobile 1 didn't have 5w-40 synthetic?
Good choice on the Rotella 5W-40 synthetic. We have been extremely pleased with it in our service rigs and personal. ( I even got our mechanic to go with it.....he was a diehard conventional rotella man) Man, I had no idea this thread would take so many turns! I am not driving as much since constructionn has slowed way down (70%), so I am going back to filter every 5K and oil every 10K and probably keep it there until I pick up to 4-5K a month of driving. Walmart still sells Rotella pretty cheap, hope that lasts.
I have heard that Rotella was good, I just have a long experience with Mobile 1, and it's been good, and generally I like to stick with what I know. I guess we'll have to see what happens. Price was $22/gal from Advance Auto Parts. I've read people saying it's $17/gal at walmart, so I'll have to check into that before I make my next purchase.
Dont spend the money on the motocraft filters. Get the fram, its the same repackaged Racor. I would never in a million years recomend a FRAM to anyone or anything except in this instance. Its like 4 or 5 bucks cheaper.
JGoebel-2 quick questions, well 1 5-40 is syn, unless I'm mistaken I haven't seen 15-40 syn but I guess it is possible. 2, when you say "stay clean for a long time" this is visually, I'd imagine? I don't claim to know much about 6.0's and less about 6.4 but have you done a UOA on that 10k oil change? I personally have changed oil in lots of vehicles where the oil didn't look too dirty on the dipstick, but the drainpan tells a different story. Never did a UOA until I bought my current truck. What is the recommended OCI for a 6.4? I can't imagine it would be more than 5k'ish, can it? And the 6.4 is probably equally as hard on oil as the 6.0 if not harder (with 2 turbos) ? Somebody help me out here- am I on the right track? Isn't the 6.4 based on the 6.0 somehow? Don't flame me, just trying to learn a little here.
6.4l engine has to take a CJ4 oil nothing ease because of the injecters an regen system also I should have said 5w40syn an have never done uoa on it I've got 24000mile on it change the oil twice

I feel the same way!!
I've stocked up with Fram filters when Pep-Boys has their 2 for $7.00 special.
