Had the same thing happen to me tonight. see following description and possible solution I found to problem. Towed X to shop for mechanic to work on tomorrow, hope this saves some expensive trouble shoot time for him. (2002 Ex 7.3 2wd, 66Kmi)
I WAS GOING UP HILL ON HWY, ENGINE WAS LUGGING IN OD, HIT THE OD BUTTON TO TURN IT OFF TO DOWN SHIFT, WHEN ALL GAUGES WENT DEAD, ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING AT IDLE SPEED THUS NO ACCELERATION AS IF TRANS WAS DISENGAGED. EVERYTHING INSIDE STILL RUNS, AC,RADIO, LIGHTS ETC, BUT TRUCK JUST IDLES, WITH NO GAUGES AND NO REV ON go PEDAL WHILE DEPRESSED. FOUND THE FOLLOWING POST, IT LOOKS LIKE IT MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM.

other post: (on 2002 ex post)
Anytime, driving or sitting still, I can push the switch to turn O/D off and it works fine. O/D is locked out and the switch lights up like normal. When I turn the switch off to allow it to shift to O/D it blows, and I mean "grenades" fuse...I think it's #41. When it blows, the throttle pedal and all the gauges go dead. The engine runs fine (at idle only) and everything else works fine.
So, it's only when I turn the O/D back on after it's been turned off.
Mods are listed in sig. What has the O/D switch got to do with gauges or the "go" pedal???__________________

SOLUTION POST:
Remove the ignition lock cylinder and remove the column shroud. There is a small harness coming out of the shifter. The harness runs on the top of the column, and usually wears and shorts out there as well.
There are three wires that are for the Overdrive Cancel Switch. One is 12v power into the switch, one to send a 12v momentary signal to the PCM, and a wire to turn the indicator lamp on/off. If the wire that sends the signal to the PCM is shorted to ground, when the OCS is depressed, it will cause the fuse to blow.

My Photos: (0) Just rechecked my fuses and I did find 1 10a blown I believe it was 45. It was labeled with something to do with the ignition. Replaced and BAM everyhing back to normal, except now my check engine light is on. Gonna pull the steering column shroud tomorrow and check the O/D harness. Also gonna connect the scanner and see what code I am getting. I'll post back my results. But atleast I am up and running, for now !!
