Just a guess, but the first indication might be that the Tach only reads up to 4000 rpm. Even a briggs and stratton can buzz more than that.
Diesel tachs are often very low ranges.

I noticed that after i posted. but for most people, how often do you take your 30+ year old V8 much past 4000?
well, the pyro and boost gauge kinda seal the assumption.
I took my 30+ year old V8 to 6K for a brief 3 seconds or so with about 15 miles on it. It scared me how crisp the throtte was, and how easily it broke traction on dirt. After I got more confident with it, it seen 5K on a regular basis.
Here is a panel I picked up out of an RV, that eventually I will use the pieces in one of my trucks. I only paid $25 for it.
