Are you just trying to be a dick or what? But yes I always have at least 1 full tank, I fill up after every major trip, and keep at least 55 gal in my garage, and 5 in the bed, at any time. I think this Janaury I will stock up while prices are low and buy 1000 gal for the year.

As far as I am concerned my trucks need for fuel is it's weakest link, this is my way of avoiding breaking that link.

so joking is not in your vocabulary?

on a serious note, it is dangerous and illegal to carry fuel in your bed or trunk in many states.

are you being a dick when you say you are going to buy 1000 gallons?

that was an example of joking by the way.

It's not dangerous, and any state where it is illegal is a state I do not wish to visit.

Kart18, Any progress? I am hoping you'll fix your fuel gauge issue so you can let me know if it's the gauge or the sender, I have the same problem.

Kart18, I have a 1987 f150 5.0 efi dual tank that does like yours. On either tank it shows past full for about 150 miles then bounces around and shows steady at about 1/8 tank and seems to be accurate from there to empty. I then swap to the second tank and go another 150 miles while the gauge shows past full, then 1/8, then empty. When dead on empty there is about 3 gallons left in each tank. Each tank holds 19 gallons. Usually about 31 to 35 gallons to fill up. It has been this way for about 17 years as I didnt want to pay the price to drop the tanks and replace the sending units.

This problem has been mentioned on the forum before. I figured I would just wait until the fuel pumps failed or the tanks rusted through, then just get it all fixed. One dude figured a way to cut a hole in his truck bed to get to the fuel pump and sending units. another found it easier to remove the truck bed than the tanks.

Hello folks,

WOW, it took awhile to realize it but this post is a year old. I can gladly report that a new sending / pump unit fixed this problem. I am however still waiting for time and cash to replace the timing chain and gears to see if it solves the other problem with the bucking and missing that we discussed through out the last year.

Have a great day everyone,
Todd

Good Morning to Everyone,

I'm sorry I haven't posted a reply for a bit. I have been busy with life. Remodeling the house and all the snow we had a few weeks back. I am however wraping up the house and my next project is to swap motors in my daughters neon. Timing belt broke and bent the valves. The truck? I am going to get back to it in the near future. I will say if the timing gears and chain don't fix it I'm not sure what I will do with it. Dam shame the thing has all those new parts in it. Plus all the parts I swaped out I saved considering they wern't bad. Good to hear from you gpendens.

Have a great day, Todd

Ok so i had a similar issue in my 89 4x4 f150 dual tanks and in the process i was just using the rear tank because i could not get any fuel from the front. is it safe to run around with out the front tank until i can put a new one in or should i let it sit. ps it is the fuel selector valve not the sending units on mine but your sound like the sending unit. but if it is your selector valve you can only get it from ford or a junk yard.

dual fuel tanks

Yodavator, the answer on running on one tank is depends. If you find yourself having to fill the tank you are using a lot more than you should, your unused tank swells up, or gas leaks out the filler cap on the unused tank, you will need to do bypass surgery. You will need to disconnect all lines from the DFR, plug the lines to the unused tank and splice the 2 lines from the engine to the 2 lines to the tank you are using.

The DFR duel fuel relay or selector vavle as you and I call it is still available form your local ford parts dealer for the 87, 88, and 89 dual tank trucks. My 2 local dealers both try to keep 1 in stock. For giggles and grins I asked them to check other dealers for inventory. East coast to west coast north to south there were a bunch in inventory. They are about $160 each part 1FUZ-9B263-B. I just bought a spare about 6 months ago and replaced one about 2 years ago. My truck is on its third one. Do a search on the dual tank or DFR or 9B263 on this site and google it. There are several good threads on this.
