i was just curious how powerstrokes compare to duramax's and cummins in stock trim and with upgrades. which is most capable of making the most power cheapest to build toughest... and what does it take to make one of our trucks run with a newer truck
I hate to say it, but if you want a truck that you can build for cheap it would have to be the cummins. I'm pretty sure the 5.9l has the most reasonable potential out of the three.
With that being said, the same number can be reached with a powerstroke. However, it takes a little more time, money, and intelligence to get those numbers.
I have no knowledge on the duramax, but I know you can get good power with little effort as well.
Yes, cummins is a little easier but the truck often will fall apart around you.
the powerstroke has seen 900+ hp. what more do you need?
dmaxes have pushed towards a thousand as well.
to run with a newer truck? you'd need Stage 1 injectors, intake, exhaust, tuning, an aftermarket turbo, and some tranny work.
Cummings will give you reliable power the easiest, however the dodge drivetrain wont stand up to it.
Duramax has a great tranny, but who would want that POS motor?
The durmax can make pretty good numbers with just a tuner and exhaust upgrade
I think the thing I used to hear with the cummings was 600 dollars for 600 HP.
I really want to put a 12v cummings in an f150 short box, like I currently have.
If you go for a cummings, i suggest manual trans.
now for the PS, the newer ones are easier to get power out of, the latest revision. Different injector setup allows them to make power easier then the old oil fire injectors.
There is a guy making massive power out of a 7.3 on the drag sceene, but he has a custom home made injector setup.
All in all, I trust the PS more then the cummings and the cummings more then the duramax. But there are also better motors then the duramax, go grab a cat diesel, or an old detroit. screw that jap motor and buy American.
The mid nineties diesel for GM wasnt' to bad, it just had some overheating problems. If you put a bunch of money into it, you might have a good motor.
if you want to build a motor (not a truck) cheep and get power, i'd grab a cummings. You'll have to go find a tranny that can hold up though.
if you want a decent drivetrain/truck and dont mind spending some extra dollars, get a PS.
If you want a 7.3, you can get really good power by going with.
1) 6637 mod, or another aftermarket cold air intake, (except k&n)
2)4" turbo back exhaust
3)Tranny upgrades, transgo kit, or acomplete rebuild with better quality tq.
4)Set of gauges, especially if you tow, or play hard with your truck
5)A DP Tuner, or Tony Wildman Tunes.
You won't have the fastest truck out there, but it won't be a sled either. It would certainly be a blast to drive though!
Will- well put comparison.
Redneck- if you're looking for an all-out drag racer or sled puller, go cummins.
anything else- go powerstroke!
even then, the PS competes extremely well with cummins in sledpullin and drag racing.

x2. Couldn't agree more. If your looking for big time power, cummins (not Dodge) is the ticket.
my buddies 99 24 valve wouldnt touch my truck bone stock vs bone stock, we then did it with the same upgrades, intakes and exhaust, then added a chip to each truck, i still had him beat even with the big tires. the cummins wont outperform the 7.3 until you start chagnig injectors out. thats when the 5.9 will start to pull away.

the original cummings turbo diesels they came out with might have been nice, but they had iddy biddy turbo's on them, and the down pipe and up pipes were super small, the injectors were really tiny too.
