We have a CB and love it. We use a wilson 1000 whip and it can't be beat; its center mounted on the X's roof. You can see some pictures in my gallery. As for why we have a CB, we have driven to many places where the cell service is spotty but we can still get a hold of someone on the CB. I guess we would use it in emergencies if the cell phones didn't work. You would be surprised of how many police and other patrols monitor either 9 or 19. We are already pushing 75,000 miles this year (all towing) so we are in the truck alot.

That is just my 2 cents.

Plus it's nice for when your on the interstates, you can pick up a lot of info from the truckers ahead. I use it mostly when traveling or during hunting season to keep tabs on where people are and the temperature.

Well I figure city folk probably don't need a CB. Why would you? Up here behind the redwood curtain it can save your life.

I have a wilson 1000 thru the roof. Why is everybody so afraid to drill thru the roof? You simpley drill a 3/4 or 7/8" hole with a hole saw paint the edges with a touch-up brush and install the antenna. If you do it right you will have no leaks, no rust, better swrs and if you think that mag mount is so great WRONG!!! everytime that whip hits something the magnet can move and that might cause micro or sometimes even large scratches then there is the problem qwith moisture getting trapped upder the magnet this is not good for the sheet metal. So don't be afraid to grab that drill and do it BUT!! before you do remember measure TWICE and please don't forget to look under whatever is there ex. headliner, console, or tv.

I mounted an antenna roof top of my ranger once. First tree that came along took it off. I replaced it, and it got swiped again in a parking garage. Sure, an extra mile is nice, but we don't have unlimited vertical clearance around here, so you have to be careful of where you put stuff.

That's what I was thinking when I saw people saying they put it on the roof. I only have about 3-4 inches of clearence in my carport as it is. lol

I have a tweaked and tuned Galaxy DX73v. Most of the people I deal with aren't on the CB band.

Being an EX Trucker,,,
I've been running a pair of Uniden Grants w/ Sideband. 1 is from 1989 and the newer unit from 1999. What I'm running for an antennea is a Road Pro Magnet mount and a Francis 4' fiberglass with a spring so any tree just bends it over. But if your really want to drill a hole in th roof, get a K40 whip antennea, but don't be afraid to have it mounted up on the roof.
As far as the foul langauge,,, When the FCC quit doing their jobs, the filth started flying!
BTW, there used to be a lisence requirement until 1st Lady Carter got that shot down! (Thanks Ms.Rosaline!!!)

But!!! This is KAIW1917, The handle I had was Gorilla from my flatbeddin' days! Now I'm Autoglass cause of my job now.

I use a magnet mount and it works great. That way, I can pop it off the roof when I go into parking garages or when I'm driving around in town and just don't want the antenna on the top. It's real handy for avoiding traffic backups, accidents, and speed traps. Also, truckers have been real helpful in letting you know about lights out, low tires, or other problems with your trailer. I wouldn't travel without one.

CB is not dead, thats for sure. I have been on CB since before I was a Ham - by several years. I don't go anywhere without a CB, or a Ham radio either. I wouldn't classify myself as a "CB'er" though, the only reason I have one is because I can raise local life on the CB faster and in more places (on the road) than I ever could on a Ham radio (exception - if I know the area, Ham it is) - not to mention its great for traffic reports, warning of where the bears are or what the coops are up to, and is a GREAT source of entertainment (that is, unless you are offended by offensive language on 19).

I spent about a year on the road hauling cars all over the eastern half of the US and learned quickly the importance of a CB while on the open road in a rig - when something goes wrong (or lights go out!) someone is there to tell ya. Any time Im haulin' the CB is on 19.

As for the CB - I use a plain-jane Cobra 29wxnwst. No mods, just straight out of the box. It does more than I need. If I want to run power Ill just flip on my HF rig and get me 100 watts. If thats not enough Ill get an amp and run 1.5 kilowatts (btw, CB power is limited to 4 watts AM as per FCC, but no one really follows that - same as with language and everything else where rules are ignored).

Antennas - my FAVORITE is a 102" whip on a spring. Can't break it. Its long, whacks everything under the sun (er, bridge.. and including the bridge), flops like a wet noodle in the wind, and is the source of many rubberneckers. But hey, its a full 1/4 wave and solid stainless steel. I have also used a few chepo mag-mounts and a 10m Hamstick. A Hamstick is a great alternative to the 102" whip, generally cheaper ($15-20 vs. about $30-40 for a 102"er) but less durable.
