I know most people dont use them anymore, but for traveling I love to have it on to listen to traffic reports from the truck drivers.
My question is: Where have the Ex owners mounted the CB Antenna? I have a Wilson 1000 and 5000 antennas but not sure I want to use them. the 1000 is a magnetic mount and is hard to get off and on the roof. The 5000 is a roof mount where I would have to drill a hole in the roof.
The reason for the "big" antennas is I have extra pwr in the radio and need a good antenna.
I've done the Wilson 5000, Firestik II's before on a L bracket between the hood and fender on Excursions and Super Duties. They have always worked well. I would not roof mount the 5000 because of the stiff lower section and the height of the ex. hit something and its pulling through the roof. Just my $.02
That was one of my worries with the 5000. Every once in while I have to go into a parking garage and I know I would forget some day that it was on the roof.
Cut a piece of square steel channel to length, drill a hole in one side and tack weld a nut on the inside. Insert it into the side of the hitch receiver and bolt it in place through one of the holes in the bottom of the receiver. Drill a hole in the other end for the antenna mounting. Be sure and bond the channel to the frame with RF braid cable.
There are access holes all throughout the floor of the cabin. Just peel back the carpet and you'll find one. Use this to route your antenna cable.
The simple 1/4 wave whip is the most efficient mobile antenna. All the loaded gimmicks do is allow an antenna with a shorter physical length. But they all will have higher losses.
scanner ant is the one in front
wilson 1000/5000(one or the other, I forget which one is up there right now, I have both) is the magmount above the pass seat.
Quick enough to unscrew if I'm going somewhere clearance is an issue.
Couldn't get the SWR low enough for my liking anywhere else on the truck.
I have a CB and police/fire scanner in my X. I used the Radio Shack thru glass antennas. The antennas have been on for 5 years and the external antenna sticky pad mount has never come off. They are mounted on the forward upper part of the rear side glasses. CB works good on the road for trucker chatter and the scanner receives local fire and police well. I know the thru glass antennas antenuate the signal especially during CB Xmit. But I just hated to drill holes in the X.

The magnet mount is where I was leaning but to get up to it to unscrew it was a hassle. I could not reach the antenna without a broom handle even standing on the running board.
Here's my current set up. Had this unit and antenna for about two years. The antenna is a Browning and when new and tuned worked fantastic. It has since lost most of it's use from extensive branch bashing and car park overhead beams. I have considered the rear mounted whip. I may go with a firestick for now. Cheap and durable. I've had many different set ups over the years. This last combo worked very well. The browning took a pretty good beating for a while. Can't tell from the photos but the whip goes pretty high above the roof line and the coil base kept it pretty stable on the highway. Simple "L" shaped bracket mount. Coax run through the bung in the firewall. The unit is fused at the battery. Everything is routed on existing wire looms. A few zip ties and you can't even tell.

Maybe I will try it again.
Thanks for the picture.
it was easier to reach it before the last month of holiday dinners, that's for sure. I'm 6'3" and I do have to stretch, but I didn't want to drill either, so I went the easy route. I'm back to a tweaked Uniden Grant right now, but I was running a "little" more power with no issues.
