limited slip is in the rear end,(differential) front and rear.. you will need to buy a spool,or Locker as they are called, they are made by many different manafactures but the ARB air lockers (IMHO) seem to be the very best of both worlds, you can unlock them for highway driving and lock them for off road use... I'll never have another truck without them...
WHEN the transfer case is in 2wd and the front hubs are out, a spool in the front will only turn by friction? If i understand this right, if your front hubs are off or out then even the transfer case won't turn the front wheels. Correct?

Hay I am new to this, don't even have a 4WD yet.
Sorry, I am not sure I understand the question.
If the transfer case is engaged, then a set of gear are engaged to bring in the front driveshaft, this then feeds the axle, like the rear. The hubs are engaged by little gears as well, but there is a spring pack that keeps them from being engaged until you put vacuum on it, or you manually engage them.. IF the hubs are disconnected, and the transfer case is also disconnected, then you should be able to lay under the truck a,d not see the front drive shaft turn while going down the road ( if you try, let me know so I can grab a camera) if the hubs are engaged then everything will turn as well if th the transfercase is engaged and the hubs are not..Hope this helps..
I am a big fan of the Dertroit lockers from previous experience, I have done nothing as of yet to modify my existing system...lack of cash.. About 500.00 per axle around here..
I know on my 96 the "locker" in there had some clutch plates and once those wore out you would have to replace them for it fully work correctly..Im not sure about the these trucks though..
I am not trying to Hijack this thread. I feel my ?s are related
I plan to use 4X4 in the sand, I would like all 4 wheels driving in the sand, and I am fine with the 1 rear driving on the highway.
The name sounds like a air over cylinder to lock the differential. Good but If when the hubs are unlocked and the transfer case is disengaged it seem a spool in the front would just be sitting there. You have to lock the hubs and engage the TC to activate the spool. The air lock would be the way to go in the rear end.
lets just use Jegs cause they came up first with Google
Detroit Locker $650
Powertrax No-Slip $580 thats interesting looking
Auburn Gear Spools $225 differential not listed
Now if I had to have all 4 working I like $875 over $1300
