I just bought a 05 F150 w/ 5.4 and 45,000 mi. and have been reading about the stories of spark plug changes. What are the recommendations on when to change them. Should I go ahead and change them and coat them w/antisieze or wait till there is a problem. I am a mechanic with a shop and tools and I could do the job myself. I ran my 96 till 160,000 mi. and will probably run this one that long and replace the truck. A couple of hundred for plugs and some of my labor seem cheap compared to a couple of thousand at a dealer/shop for head removal and possible replacement.
If your a competent mechanic which I am sure you are, you should be able to do the job, if you have the right extraction tools, & follow the latest TSB! Good luck if you do it! Keep us posted!
So have either of you attempted the plug change or are you just suggesting the original poster should give it a shot. I'm always curious in the spark plug threads if those saying, go for it, have ever tried it.
I'm going to try it as soon as my extraction tool arrives.
I did it at 37k, followed the TSB and had two break. They make a lot of squeaking noise coming out. The ones that quit making the noise are the ones that broke.
Thanks for the info. I'm leaning towards changing them soon. Where can I get the extraction tool or are the dimensions available to build my own. Ive got a small machine shop and they dont look that complicated to make.
Have they come out with a decent plug like the 1 they use in Mustangs? From what I understand the only reason we don't use them in the 5.4s is the temp range. Hoping someone developes 1 soon as I have 70 KM, 42 miles, on mine and looking for a better plug.
Not sure what you mean by decent. However, there are two brands making a one piece plug. Champion (Part No. 7989) which is double platinum like OEM, and Brisk which is not double platinum requiring plug changes every ~20,000-25,000 miles. I've never been a fan of Champion but I'm seriously considering putting those in at 30,000 miles. My 2005 currently has ~23,000 miles.
okay, im kinda new here, signed on awhile ago, and now im back since i seem to have me a stable full of fords, 93 f250 xtracab 4x4, just got an 06 150 screw 4x4 lariat and an 08 edge limited.
my question and concern is these plugs. yes i am very equipped and knowledgable, and only worrying bout it cuz im reading it here. the 06 has a 5.4 with 40,000 on it. totaly loving this truck, nicest ride i ever had, cept for the edge.
anyway, i dont know the service of this truck, i was a corporate lease so i ASSume the service was done. but i doubt the plugs were changed.
so, should i do them, and where would i find the TSB for it?
one more thing, i cant seem to find the signature area in my control panel, and i am very familiar with forums.
I've swapped 5.4 plugs several times. Really not that hard, use Kroil to soak down the threads first. I soak them, let them sit for 20 minutes, back each off 1/4 turn, resoak for another 20 minutes and then take them out. Not a hard job, just time consuming because the coils have to come out and the two plugs in the back are a little tough to reach.
