I have an 09 150 with the 5.4 and have been hearing from my buddies, with older 5.4's, that their plug changes have cost them in excess of $700 due to the plugs being stuck in the head and snapping off when the shop removes them. My question is, has Ford addressed this in the later 5.4's or should I not wait till 100k to change the plugs and do it sooner and add anti-seize to the threads?
So, how does the new design prevent them from seizing in the head? I was under the impression the original problem was related to the aluminum head and steel plugs?? Was it a carbon issue?
I understand; however, since no one can explain it exactly ( the same thing happened tomy buddy a month ago) the best bet is to see the Service Manager as they have it, with illustrations. Good luck!
The old spark plug was a 2 piece design, the elongated electrode body was threaded into the main plug. The problem was carbon would build up around the elongated part in the cylinder, making it hard to remove the plug and causing the plug to break, leaving the electrode still in the head. A special extractor tool was then used to thread into the broken piece in the head to remove it. Late in 2008, a one piece plug was used to hopefully eliminate this issue.
champion offers a spark plug to replace the 2 piece design with a stronger one piece.havnt tried them myself or seen them being used in our shop.
have had about 4 or 5 2006+ 5.4 come in a week after they get there plugs changed due to the mechanic globbing anti seize onto the threads of the plug to "prevent" it from breaking off inside the hole.considering the tread has nothing to do with the reason they break! but back onto the topic of the anti seize, after a 100 km or so the anti seize heats up turning into liquid and seeping its way down to the electrode causing fowled plugs.nice preventable maintenance.
Thats what I was looking for! Thanks for the info and for taking the time to post it. Part of me is still leary and will likely pull a plug or two down the road and see how it goes.
