I think I bought warhammers M715 and now trying to figure what 460 this is as i have to replace the gaskets
I am not 100%sure if this is warhammers rig as I can't see his posted image to verify, but mine has a 460cu wizh C-6 and hence assume its the one
Go down to the engine forum for the big blocks and do a search there. Also do a google search. You are right, when you take the valve covers off there may be some numbers you can find on top of the heads. You may also find out some info for other numbers on the outside of the block. You then may be able to piece together what year it is.
P.S. I think I would get some split plastic wire loom to put over all those wires. Try to protect all those butt splices a little bit. The engine when it's running will tend to vibrate and twist, and that will shake those wires going across to the inner fender. I would try to support them in some fashion. Don't let the wiring connections support the weight of the wires.
