Well.. I spent a few hours cleaning all the connections and grounds I could find. Plus I replaced the speed sensor on the back of the transfer case. I took the truck for about a 20 mile test drive this evening and I >think< it's fixed. The transmission shifted great. I hope it stays that way. Wish me luck. Thanks again all for your help.
BTW, On every connector on the truck I have found so far some jackleg has broken off the locking tabs. I hope that don't cause me more problems down the road.
im not sure if your truck has it but i used to work at a shop where we put on and installed canopies.and there is a brake wire under the hood on the drivers side coming out of the loom maybe there is a possibility it is meesing with the system it should be labeled unless it has been messed with.dont know if this is a possibility but hey ya never know.its easy to check out when you step on your brakes it will get power if it doesnt there is an issue
Good idea Dodge/Cummins. I did tape up the ones I could get to but the really important ones like the connection on the right side of the trans and the range selector sensor I couldn't get to to tape up. I wonder if its possible to buy new connectors for them and how hard it would be to replace them? Where to get them?
I'm pretty sure you can get the connectors at Ford or even in the after-market, I'm sure I've seen them somewhere.
The problem is that you'll have to attatch the wires to the connector which will probably be a pain in those hard-to-reach places and then you have extra "joints" in your wiring harness.
I think I'd just leave it like you have it now.
have you checked the brake switch on the bracke pedal to make sure it is not too close and switching on and off while going down the road? and is your speedometer the on with the cable and the sensor? cable could be turning hard causing vss gear the skip teeth? just throwing it out there.
Burninoil, yep checked all that and just replaced the speed sensor. I drove the truck about 50 miles yesterday. For now the transmission is shifting great! I even ran across a goose neck trailer while I was out that I just had to have, bought it and pulled it home. I was very pleased with the way the truck performed with the trailer in tow.
Dodge/Cummins. I think your right on the connectors. As long as its working I'm not gonna mess with it anymore. I did manage to get some zip ties around the plugs to help hold them tight after I cleaned them and packed them with die electric grease. If it aint broke dont fix it, right?
BTW, I think the VSS was the problem all along. Before I changed it the truck seemed to be flying when it showed 50 mph. Since I changed the VSS now the truck seems to be running normal speed when showing 50 mph. Could be just my imagination but I think the VSS was way off calibration.
i dont mean to hijack this thread but am having similar problems. my back passenger turn signal wont work and when i turn it on it makes the torque converter unlock. what could be causing this?
The turn signal switch is supposed to cancel the brake light on the side you select. Sounds to me like it's not doing that and it's feeding the signal lites back into the brake circuit which makes the torque converter think the brakes are applied and unlock. I would check the signal switch in the steering column.
thanks for the reply galute. i had the steering column tore a part the other day and i guess i didnt get the signal switch tight enough and it wasnt making good enough contact. tightened it and now its good to go.
