I'm going to buy an aftermarket carb for my '86 F-250 460 mudding truck, wondering which one I should get.
Engine is stock now, but I hope to add an intake, headers, cam in the future and not have to buy a second carb.
What do you guys recommend?
Well I'am firm believer in the holleys and type....I run a 750cfm on a Mild 395"er thats in my 70 right now...with a small cam and C4 heads and headers..
I would only take it up to an 850cfm....Might be a little much for stock motor ..But it'll come in handy with the other parts you want to add...JMO !
If you are going with a vacuum secondary carb, and 850 would be OK to almost 6400 rpm for later on. But the really best for a stocker is gonna be a 700 vacuum secondary. To do it right for both the stocker and the modded motor you really need two different carbs. A 700 for the stocker which is good to 5200 rpm which is way past the stock cam's ability and an 850 double pumper for when you mod the motor.
I think it's been pretty much covered, but I just wanted to say, that with a stock motor, you definitely wouldn't want to go any bigger than a 750cfm carb, and that would probably be overcarbed for a stock engine, but as you start modding, it should even out with a mild build. Keep in mind, stock 460's only had a 600cfm carb. However, beyond cam, headers, intake, and other common mods I would go up to at least an 850cfm carb.
