I finally got the bed done and the tail gate back from paint. Pictures soon as I get the gate mounted. I used the plastic wood for decks and I think it came out nice.
I had forgotten what the tailgate looked like and when I got it back the letters are a lot smaller than the picture on the Mid fifties catolge. How large are yours.
?? The Picture shows the letters amost a big as the side stripe.

No it was different than using regular lumber. What I didn't realize is the crossmember only go in one way. The outside holes lined up and I thought that they would automatically line up and didn't check before we started the project. Couldn't firgure out why the holes in the two crossmember didn't match the holes in the front and rear. It does matter which way you put them in so check that all four holes are in line before you start.
Then we cut spacer Pieces out of cedar to put between the boards so they were six inches wide. Actually 6&1/8" apart. The material is really easy to work with.
I also bought the side angles to go along side the bed side. This was the hardest as your bedsides get warped over the years and are kind of hard to get back in a straight line.
I used the imatation cedar and I like it against the black strips. I'll post a picture as soon as I get the tailgate on.
