I bolted an Explorer 8.8 under my 53 with little problems. All I had to do was cut the spring perches off and weld them on the opposite side. Then I welded the shock mounts in the proper location. Pics in my Gallery under rebuild pics. Welcome to the site! There are some great people on here and good info.

Ditto on the 8.8 from a 87 Lincoln, just need to cut off all of the suspension brackets and weld on the proper spring perches.
Also, a 9" rear-end from a 57-72 F100 will bolt in with some changes to the shock mounts.

Hi derbylife,
I see the guys haver alresdy answered your questions and I also see this was you first post. So, I guess I get to be the first to welcome you to the FTE. When you get the required number of posts in you will be able to use the PM feature and post some pictures. Not sure how many it takes though. First thing you need to do is go work on your profile and fill in your location. Believe me when I tell you this is going to help a lot. When others see they are near you they can tell you about stuff you may be looking for that they have or know the location of in respect to where you are. Also, if you haven't already done so, you need to start taking pictures of your project progress and the stuff yoy are doing to it. That way you can build up your gallery. Meanwhile you can reply to some posts by others that are doing or have done stuff that interests you. In a short time you will have enough posts to use all the FTE features. Once again welcome, and don't forget the pictures.

Later Man...

Welcome to the forum, as you can see you are in the right place when it comes to early F100 tech.
As for your question, there are many rearends that will work...even the stock rearend if you like the gear ratio. I bought a 56 some years ago and it had and early Chevy rearend in it...before Ford had the 9 inch these were the strongest available. Your decision on which rearend you use will depend on what you need...gear ratio, disc brakes, etc. The spring perches are 40 inches on center, that spacing and the overall width will drive your selection. Of course you can always move the spring perches (especially if you are going to "flip" the rearend) and you can change the backspacing on your wheels to accomodate a wider rearend. Good luck...
