On the '96 F-250 PS the key felt weird this morning and it appears that there is something wrong in the linkage between the ignition lock and the ignition switch. I have unbolted the switch so it can be operated by hand so the truck can still be driven.
Has anyone gone through this before? Was it an easy fix?
How do you get the rod between the lock and the switch out? I think it might be broken in the linkage (tilt column).
How do you pull the tilt assembly other than removing the two side bolts?
Thanks
is it definatly the rod or is it the switch itself? i have replaced countless switches for this problem, never had the linkage go bad, its just a rod with a bend on the end..... doesnt exactly go bad...lol
It is the rod. When turning the key the the lowest part of the rod doesn't move. The upper part of the rod has no connection to the lower part that is attached to the switch. Seems like it is broken in the tilt linkage area. I now operate the switch by hand. I have the switch hanging lose and push and pull the pin on it back and forth to operate it. Any advice on repair?
If they use the same setup on our trucks compared to the early 90s/late 80's trucks it is useless to fix.
My gasser has gone through 3 rods and I opted to bypass it rig up a push switch. My old man's truck had the same problem, but he opted for a needle nose pliers until he sold it.
