it runs same with out it but it is harder to start. it still has a bad miss and fills the air with a constant stream smoke

scan for codes, burnt wire harness perhaps? maybe get lucky and the connector came off?

I would take off the valve covers and nose around a bit. I bet you'll find something unusual... Without the flames, it sounds like a bent or unseated push rod to me. I would check those out, along with your wire harnesses, inside and out. Just my .02
