I bought one for a forklift that goes in the bottom radiator hose, it works great even in 10 degree weather. They also have magnetic ones that stick on the side of the block, but I've never used one.

Is about 1/2 hour safe? I was wondering about leaving it plugged all the time. The truck sits in the garage that gets pretty cold.I only drive it on the weekends

Don't worry how long you leave it plugged in, it won't hurt anything other than your wallet. If you leave the blockheater plugged in over night the block will feel warm to the touch. It won't do anything to the coolant.

You would notice it was plugged in when the electric bill comes.
That would be like 10 100 watt lightbulbs on 24/7.

If you leave the house at the same time every day, a heavy duty timer works well.

Drain the coolant, you will still have some come out when you pull the old one out.
And to see it, you are going to be directly under the block heater when you pull it.

Changing it is not hard, but is a bit of a PIA because of the location.

I have changed several in my driveway.

I have mine on a heavy duty timer that comes on 2 hours before I need to leave, and it goes off 30 minutes after I am supposed to leave incase I forget and plug it in when I am not going anywhere the next day or if for some wierd reason there is a lot of snow and work is called off.

It's great though, it will start on the first revolution over and the heater is warm in a minute or so rather than 10.
