I have a 2007 E350 V-10 van with a 5-speed automatic torqshift trans. The transmission overheated on a recent trip and I have since had it check-out and everything is okay for now.
I am thinking about installing an after-market pan with 4.5 qt. of added capacity and also a transmission temperature gauge with the sender tapped into the new pan.
Do you know if adding the after-market pan and temp gauge will affect the Ford warranty on the transmission?
It would be best to ask your local dealer you have assist you as they will be the ones doing the warranty work. A mod friendly dealer shouldn't have a problem with it. I would first wonder WHY the tranny overheated in the first place. Where you towing? If it was just the van, I would be VERY worried. If you were towing, do you have a cooler installed? If not, a GOOD cooler would be better than the pan.
Ypu can install a gauge without tapping the pan, the torque-shift has an unused port to install the probe. It high on the drivers side of the tranny....Unscrew the cap/plug and install the probe.
You dont need to wait for an A/M pan to install a temp guage. The torque shift has a port to get fluid temp out of it. Its a simple install and worth while cause the stock guages is inaccurate. I have the Mag-Tech deep sump on my truck and it never gets about 150 anymore.
You may want to have the dealer flush your trans for ya too, if you are not going to install the deep sump pan right away.
Thanks for the reply. I'm delighted to hear that a port for the temp gauge already exists on the torqshift. I just returned from inspecting the trans, and sure enough, it's right where you said it should be. That made my day!
I did take the van into the Ford dealer and he replaced the torque converter, clutches and seals and flushed the system. The dealer thought the torque converter was not locking-up properly and replaced the unit and checked-out everything else. The transmission mechanic had 30-yrs experience and I felt good about his work.
The van does have a trans-cooler and I was not towing anything. It is however a 4x4 conversion and is heavier than a stock E350 van. I want to install the temp gauge right away and may also add the deep sump pan later.
Transmission fluid was blown out the oil dip stick and also out the vent on top of the transmission. I was going down the highway about 75 to 80 mph (speed limit was 80 mph along IH 10 in west Texas). I lost about a quart of fluid.
Interesting. I was assuming it overheated, but your comment casts a new light on the issue. I had reviewed all maintenance records prior to concluding it had overheated and could not find any indication of overfilling. Now that I'm installing a temp gauge, I'll be able to keep track of what's going on and make sure the fluid level is correct. You may be right.
