got a wierd rough running condition when first starting

when i start the truck in the morning or when coming home from work it fires up just fine then i put it in drive and after about 30 seconds the check engine light comes on and the idle drops down to mabye 200 rpm and i have to put it in neutral to keep it running. this will happen for 30 seconds to a minute or if i just put it in drive it is fine. after waiting 30 seconds or putting it in drive it runs fine, the check engine light goes off, and all is fine. won't do it again till it sits for hours again. this has just started in the past 2 days and i haven't changed naything or done anything to the truck.

any ideas?

sounds like the high pressure oil res. may be draining back when you let it sit for awhile? you need to get a scanner on it and figure out what code it is setting for the CEL and let us know what code it throws. thats where you need to start. check it with a scanner

Sounds to me like the valve cover connectors or under cover harness is melted. Check all four valve cover connectors for melted terminals.

i'll check for melted plastic in the morning.

The cel will be stored in the computer,so you don't have to have a cel light on to get it scanned somewhere.

To get the stored codes you will need a good reader. The ones at Autozone etc. won't pull stored codes. A good shop will have one but they will charge you.

find any melted valve cover connectors?

good thought Tim, i always forget about the UVC connectors til someone mentions it.

sorry i haven't updated this yet. do melted or burnt connectors and so far i haven't had time to get to a shop to check the cel. but on the bright side it hasn't done it in 3 days. go figure still slightly troubling though not knowing..
