C-4 Overhaul
I don't know if this will be too much to ask but I just got an overhaul kit for my C-4 at Checker (Pioneer - Part #752020 if you want to know) in order to get the gaskets for the valve body, but I figured since I have it maybe I should go ahead and do the whole overhaul. I am not very experienced and have a limited tool supply at home and pulling the transmission out is basically out of the question. It could be done probably but I would rather not. I was wondering if anyone has done this, if so, how involved and how difficult is it? And also if anyone knows where I could find instructions of some kind to guide me through the overhaul.
Thanks for any help!
It is sort of heavy, cumbersome and mind boggling.
But in case you want to attempt removal here is a primer.
Remove both battery cables.
Raise the vehicle to a comfortable height to provide sufficient clearance for you and a transmission jack.
Usually 2 1/2 - 3 feet.
Remove the pan and allow the fluid to drain.
While this isn't necessary it minimizes fluid leaking out once the drive shaft is removed.
Remove the drive shaft, starter, speedometer cable, convertor inspection cover, convertor nuts.
Disconnect manual and kick down linkages.
Raise the transmission high enough to remove the cross member and rear mount.
Lower the transmission and disconnect the 2 cooler lines at the transmission.
Remove the housing to engine bolts.
Lower the tansmission and roll it from under the car.

If you don't feel comfortable removing the trans, don't try an overhaul. Removing the trans is the easy part.
There was a guy asking the same question a while back. After I cautioned him etc, he says he's a master mechanic, why don't I think he can do it....
why he asked the question is beyond me. I know why you asked, as you are being honest. So here I go: I saw a guy pull a C4 apart one time. Holy Cow there's a lot of stuff in there! I wouldn't try this if I did have the tools, lifts, jacks, etc. Now if you get all that and have the time to do it a couple of times, go for it. (not that you'll make a mistake, but you might....)
OR:
$913 or so + shipping buys this fancied up C4, so perhaps you could divide by 2 if you search out a good local rebuilder.

Yeah I think I just decided that I will replace the seals that are leaking (speedometer cable, pan, and shift shaft) and perhaps do the rebuild another time when I am better prepared for the job.
