Delco Glow Plugs

Are Delco plugs junk? I keep seeing that Motorcraft/Bero plugs are recommended, and that Autolites are an invitation to pull a head to retrieve the broken tips. I'm getting Delcos for $10/ea. which makes me concerned that they are Autolite quality.

I've gone through a couple sets of the Delco plugs in a short period of time. I have starting issues and keep bouncing between air leaks and glow plug and/or controller issues. I have the relay now wired to a momentary switch to eliminate the controller as a potential problem. When I put new plugs in, it starts right up, but the plugs don't last more than a week.

I have been buying them at a reputable diesel service facility, who tells me the Delco plugs are OEM for that motor, and that I may be either running too much advance on the pump or the controller/relay is passing voltage constantly which is burning out the plugs.

I think I started with air leaks, battery issues, starter issues, and glow plug problems. Now I have replaced virtually every fuel supply and return line, new batteries, new starter, new glow plugs, and a momentary switch on the glow plug relay. I'm still burning out plugs.

I believe the delco ones are OEM. We had the delcos in ours... key word had. Same problem as you, faught the harness and controller to find out the plugs were just burnin out. A way to get around the controller, is run it to a pushbutton switch. On cold morning hold it in for 10 seconds, and fire her up.

AC delco is OEM for the GM diesels. Beru is OEM for the ford diesels. You can get beru glow plugs for $10.

I should have "quoted" Scout as I saw that you were only holding yours on for 10 sec.
I was afraid he might be holding them on longer and burning them out "manually"

I think it's pretty amazing that all these manufacturers sell these junky glowplugs, and keep getting away with it. I have seen it personally myself. Champion glowplugs, engine won't start, most all are burnt out. Put in the motorcraft/beru, and it has been starting for a year now.

I am getting ready to buy some international harvester glowplugs, and from my research, I hope they are made by the beru people too.

Yeah, I put autolights in my 88 a week ago, and I am pretty sure over half of them are burnt out now. I am waiting on the motorcrafts to come in before I pull the ALs, and Im just hopin that none of the tips are broken

It is pretty unbelievable that they can sell this crap and get away with it.
I also can't believe that the general home-mechanic type guys (like me) haven't all heard about home crappy they are with out coming to a site that is dedicated to these trucks. You'd think the word would get around and it would be fairly common knowledge. Things/parts that aren't nearly as bad as these things have a bad reputation.

Works like this, Autolite or Champion, man they sell tons of spark plugs, so they should have great glow plugs.

Name recognition sells the products.
Bad products give the engine a bad name.

I used Delcos in my 6.9 for years and have had no troubles from them. I can't say which is better but I haven't had any troubles.
