I have a 82 f-150 351w 4x4 xlt auto c6. I want to upgrade the carb <2bbl to 4bbl> but I don't want to spend more than what I spent on the truck. I was looking on ebay it seems there is alot of used carbs so I thought I would buy one and rebuild it. What do I want to look for I know I need the automatic kick down. any thing is appriciated thanks in advance.
vacuum advance and electric choke. probably in the 600cfm range. get something with a 4150 style base like a basic holley, road demon (or jr), or performer.
a lot of people have mixed feelings about demons but you can get a remanufactured from barry grant road demon jr carb for like 275 bucks from jegs. it seems that you need to know how to tune a demon, not just holleys, to get them just right but they are good pieces. a 525 would probably be a good size because it will really wet flow like 575 cfm.
Good info thanks you saved me money and headaches. what about an intake though I don't think there would be any wear. I could blast one with plastic media at work to restore th finish.
If you buy anything, be it Holley, Demon, Eddey, doesn't matter if it's new or not.. ALWAYS dis-assemble it, because I haven't gotten one that didin't have shavings in it from the machining process. It's worth the time to take the thing apart and put it back together (I call it the learning process). I quit buying used for a reason, but maybe that's just me. Just like engine assemblies, the person that puts it together is ultimately responsible for whether the thing works or not. They're not gonna come fix it for ya.....
You can get them direct from Holley performance on ebay, they call them remanned carbs but are carbs that have been sold and returned, because someone tuned them out of operating range usually, Have no fear buying one of these carbs, plus they have a warranty and you can call them should you have a problem... I have bought from them and they really are new carbs...
