When I checked the rear axle on my wifes 2002 Mountaineer the fluid was grayist. Is this normal or is because it's synthetic 75w-140 fluid? The reason that I checked the rear was because it seems to be getting louder.
Also, how can I tell if this car has a standard or a limited slip rear? I see that it will take a friction modifier if it has a limited slip rear.
Thanks, Jay
the grey is water in the oil. you should change with 75-140 FULL synthetic oil. synthetic sticks better to the gears and will change the "noise" pitch. a also tried the addative even tho i dont have limit slip. that stuff has friction modifiers that also make the oil "stick". and will change the noise level in the gear mesh. try it , it works. also if you have an ABS light from time to time, that is the dirty oil sticking on the pickup. pull it out of the top of the pumpkin and clean off the end.
OK Steve. How did you find that info? I have a number 45 axle and a V trany. The axle is a 3.55c.
Do you know what the SPR means on that lable? I have a KE.????
Do you have a full vin decoder?
Thanks again for the info, Jay
