Send a sample of your oil to Blackstone Labs for an oil analysis to see if you can extend your oil use.

I switched over to Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme Synthetic 5w40.

Most of what I have seen from the 6.0 is that it shears syn pretty hard too. You are really getting better cold performance from a syn and as well as superior high temp performance too. You might get a bit more mileage from a syn but that is not the reason to go that route on the 6.0 IMO.

I do use a syn myself though.

Most people still change at 5,000 mile intervals even with synthetic because of the shearing characteristics of the 6.0. Just a little better protection if towing heavy, especially in high temps.

I am using mobil 1 5-40 and I change my oil religiously at 5,000 miles! its cheap insurance to run the syn. in my opinion.especially if you live in a cold climate like I do.

We go 7,500 here. Have been since the 9,000 mark with 5W-40 Rotella.
112,000 miles so far with only repair to engine being 1 EGR valve.
We also have never had either the buzz or inductive heat flash on this 2004 6.0.

I use Rotella Synthetic and have heard it isn't a "true" synthetic oil. Are the Valvoline and Mobile1 oils "true" Synthetic or the same as Rotella?

Go back and tell the person who told you Rotella T synthetic is not fully synthetic he is wrong. 100% pure synthetic.

I was just searching for where I read about Rotella T Synthetic and here is where I read it from "ThumperTalk web site":
"Rotella syn is a great oil, good stuff.

It is a group III oil not a REAL synthetic. I have seen UOA's of group III's out performing PAO's in the wear category.

By the way more oils called "synthetic are not really synthetic at all anymore" just highly refined dino oil. Even Mobil1 changed from a pure synthtic base stock."
It's just another post from another forum, I don't know how true it is. I thought I would just share to see what you guy's think.

Shells web page says that its a (fully synthetic motor oil) I would think it would be fraud or false advertising to sell it and not be 100% synthetic. Maybe there lawyers found a way around it.

I experimented from Rotella T Syn 5W/40 to Mobil-1 5W/40. No comparison, Mobil-1 ran much smoother, but granted I didn't do any analysis. Rotella T is a class III synthetic and Mobil-1 is a class IV?

API Base stock catagories:

Polyalphaolefin (PAO) = API (American Petroleum Institute) Group IV base oil

Synthetic esters, etc = API Group V base oils (non-PAO synthetics, including diesters, polyolesters, alklylated napthlenes, alkyklated benzenes, etc.)

Hydrocracked/Hydroisomerized = API Group III base oils. Chevron, Mobil, and other petrochemical companies developed processes involving catalytic conversion of feed stocks under pressure in the presence of hydrogen into high quality mineral lubricating oil. In 2005, production of GTL (Gas-to-liquid) Group III base stocks began. The best of these perform much like polyalphaolefin.

Despite being natural, motor oils formulated with Group III base stocks are now considered synthetic motor oil in North America. Originally, the term synthetic was used for oils "built" from a feedstock like ethylene. The definition has expanded to include the highly refined Group 3 oils.

It was in 1999 that NAD ruled that hydro-isomerized base oils (Group III) can be classified as "synthetic oils". The API and SAE were involved w/ the NAD in this decision. NAD is the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau.

More Info:

The CAS number for the more typical all-hydroprocessed group 3 base oils is 64742-54-7. If you want to know your synthetic oil is made from, take a look at the MSDS and look for these numbers. (The CAS number for PAO is 68037-01-4). Interesting isn't it!

As of July 15, 2004
Mineral Paraffininc Base Oil - 64742-54-7; VI of +94 to 120, any group # from 1 to 3.
Mineral Naphthenic Base Oil - 64741-96-4; VI of -15, any group # from 1 to 3.
Mineral Aromatic Base Oil - 64742-03-7; VI of -185, any group # from 1 to 3.
Hydrotreated paraffininc, heavy - 64742-52-5, Group 1, 2, or 3
Hydrotreated paraffinic, light - 64742-53-6, Group 1, 2, or 3

PAO's (Group 4 oils): 68649-12-7, 68037-01-4, 163149-29-9, 151006-63-2, 151006-62-1, 151006-60-9. VII's of +155 or greater.

Diester (Group 5 oils): 28472-97-1; VII's average +170.

Viscosity Index Copolymers - 127883-08-3

Additives:
