If I am not mistaken, Cat invented the high pressure rail system.
I don't know about that but Cat did develop the HEUI system that both Cat and International use/used.
At one point Cat was going to take International to court over the use of the HEUI system without permission and financial compensation.
If you can buy 4 gals for $25.00..... where do I sign up? If the Rotella oil is so bad why does every over the road trucker that I have talked to use it?
No owner operator trucker in his right mind would run his truck 100,000 miles on an oil change interval.
And if you are going to change every 20,000 miles Rotella T is still better than a DINO oil
here is the stuff i use, i highly recommend this oil its good for all diesel trucks on the road, cj-4 rated and full syn oil not wanna be full syn like group 3 oils are:
Mobil Delvac 1 full synthetic 5W-40 diesel engine . Shipped in a case of 4 one gallon containers. Simply the finest diesel engine oil, providing a full 40 weight oil thickness protection and a superior additive package capable of providing oil change intervals of up to 100,000 miles for over the road trucks! You will be amazed with the instantaneous starting with Delvac 1 and its overall performance! If your diesel is EGR valve equipped and/or exhaust particulate filtered, Delvac 1 ESP is your answer for long lasting, trouble free operation! Mineral based diesel oils create an almost resin like substance in as little as 25,000 miles, causing the EGR valve to stick. Delvac 1's 100% "real" synthetic base stock (as opposed to Group III wannabee synthetic base stocks) stands up to the grueling temps, providing trouble free EGR performance! Delvac 1 ESP meets/exceeds API service levels CJ-4, CI-4Plus, CI-4, CH-4, CF-4, SL and SJ.
I have tried synthetic rotilla, vavoline blue bottle synthetic I think and Lucas 5-40 synthetic. Once I used the Mobil Devlac I haven't used anything else.My truck loves the stuff. As for a 100000 miles... That is something that wouldn't enter my mind.I have a blackstone sample on the table to send in with 7500 of the nastiest miles I have put on my truck,I will post the report.
Just an FYI -
Looking at MSDS sheets, the Mobil Delvac 1 oil still shows a 70%+ content of highly refined petroleum base stock. I have read that there is a minimum percent content of the Group IV(or V) base stock necessary to claim that it is full synthetic. I will try to find the source of the info and the percentage.
Just so folks do not get to excited, the quest for a fulll Group IV or for a Group IV/V blend is really not necessary IMO. The quality of the highly refined petroleum base stock is VERY hitgh quality. Taking your OCI to 10K (or really even past 7.5k) IMO is probably an unwise thing to do from a cost effective perspective.
The Royal Purple sales person claimed that their oil was a Group IV/V blend. I have seen no proof.
The Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme synthetic (blue bottle) comes in 15W-40 and 5W-40. Be sure to get the one you want.
I have been using rotella t 15w40 since new no problems I will be switching to 5w40 synthetic rotella next week and installing my by-pass filter and I will be sending out oil samples to see how long I can extend the oil change intervals.
Also something to mention is POWERSTROKEHELP.COM - The Information Source for Ford Power Stroke Diesel Owners he has alot of good information on 6L psd.
I had some warranty work done on my truck recently, and they ended up changing the oil as well. They changed out the Rotella T syn 5w-40 for Motorcraft 15w-40. I live near Chicago, and we are in for a moderate cold spell with lows maybe -12. I cannot plug my truck in where I park it, so it sits cold all night until I fire it up in the morning. Think the Motorcraft 15w-40 will be fine in there?

Actually most synthetics are Group III. (Rotella, Chevron, Castrol (I suspect Valvoline)..)
Group IV are usually boutique or pricier brand name (Amsoil, Royal P or Mobil)
Only Group V that I know of is Redline.

Your truck will be sluggish and probably sound like it will blow-up, but it will probably be fine. Hopefully, your using anti-gel fuel additives mixed on the heavy side.
Just let it warm up slowly before driving off.
Personally, I would switch back to 5W-40 due to the extremes cold temps right now in Chicago... but that is me.

It will clatter on you but will be OK. Maybe they used diesel rated 10W-30? That's what the manual calls for at those temps.
I just switched to Rotella T 5W-40 synthetic. It will be in the low teens this Friday so we'll see how it starts. Here's the tech data sheet from Shell's website (not the MSDS): http://http://www.sopus-staging.com/...ic_TDS_v10.pdf
Shell states on their website "Protection in Extreme Climates - Shell Rotella® T Synthetic is based on free-flowing synthetic base oils that allow reliable pumping on start-up under cold climate conditions yet remain thick enough even under high temperature operation to protect against wear." So how do they define "synthetic base oils?"
I think it's fine for my climate but I did notice the pour point is -36, so that wouldn't cut it for the Alaska crowd in winter.
I was going to switch to Rotella 5w40 Synthetic but this has me thinking...maybe not. I wasnt going to do it for longer change intervals just better cold start protection and an all around good oil for the summer plus its a syntheitc...isnt it? I change the oil 4xs a year wether it needs it or not..again my choice. Rotella is 19.00 for a 4qt. jug here so its well within the price range. Now Mobil 1 Diesel Truck oil is 26.00 and I have yet to find valvoline Premium Blue Synthetic but I am willing to bet it would be within the 26-35 dollar range.
So I guess my question is will the Rotella good for me? or would the mobil 1 or valvoline be better at the cost of possibly 21.00 a gallon more?

Sarge
Personal preference... no one can give you an absolute answer.
1) All oils are 5W-40 synthetic.
2) All are CJ4 rated.
3) Cost is only factor.
Do you wear boxer or briefs... everyone is different and they all do their function well.
Personally, I use Rotella-Syn due to cost and availability at Walmart. For every user that hates Rotella or uses some other brand, I can show you consistent oil analysis reports from Blackstone stating all is well and within limits for a truck with 139,000 miles on it. I do believe the key is using only Racor/Motorcraft oil filters and changing the oil every 5,000 miles... but that is me.
Is Mobil and Valvoline good oil...of course they are... are they better oils... and better for the money... that is a personal decision that no one can naswer for you... only you can answer it for yourself.
Personally, using the cheapest API certifed CJ4 diesel rated motor oil is better than the most expensive 15W-40 dino oil.
