Yep, 4 quarts should do it. My rear diff has a tag with 75w140 Syn on it. ($15/Qt)
Some guys use 80w90 but I don't know for sure if it's OK. I try to follow the factory
recommendations.

I came across the same information saying to use 75w140 when I was trying to find the capacity. The Ford Diesel Supplemental manual also says to use a friction modifier. Ever hear of this stuff?

If you have a LS use a friction modifier...if you are going to Royal Purple you do not need it.....as well with most synthetics you will not need the modifier
Most synthetics have friction modifier like Ron said but they usually do not contain
enough IMO. I add an additional 8 ozs. You can get it atmost auto part stores.
There are some here that do not use the modifier at all, it makes the clutches a nosier
and may wear out a sooner but the LS will grab sooner and hold on longer. If you are
off-roading a lot then leave it out.
