Get 'em while you can.
And if you live in a rural area, a long range rifle might be on that list as well.
A couple of comments. . . (because 'some' or 'someone' may take offense to your choice of words). Oh, not me, by the way.
Short barrel pump shot gun - Clarification: A SBS (Short Barrel Shotgun) is 'regulated' by the BATFE. Anything with a barrel under 18" and has an overall length that is less than 25 or 25-1/2" (I think) is a SBS.
Moving on. . .
A .40 S&W with JHP and a 12 ga. scattergun w/00B makes really good sense for HD!
My personal preference -
.45 acp semi-auto handgun, loaded with Federal 230 gr JHP "Hydra-Shok" ammo.
.357 Magnum revolver - loaded with Federal "Nyclad" 125 gr LHP +P ammo
12 ga. Remington 870 stoked with Federal Tactical 'w/Flite Control wad' 00B
XD is a decent handgun!
You might look at the S&W M&P in .40 S&W, too. About the same $$$.
The one thing that makes me second-guess the XD is parts replacement.
Since the firearm is made in Croatia, you MIGHT have an issue with getting parts.
(It MUST go back to SAI for parts/repairs.)
Or. . . Glock G23. Same 'basic' size. Reasonably priced. Parts are available and plentiful. Glock has an amazing support (customer service) department.

All I've ever owned is BB pistols and one .22 pellet rifle.
I'm signed up for a course that will allow me to get my PAL (posession and acquisition license), so that happens next month.
I'm rather interested in bird hunting; pheasant, goose, etc so, definitely be wanting a shotgun, likely a pump action. Also would like to get into deer and maybe moose or elk so a suitable rifle.
for protecting and defending my home... well, I'm pretty good with a slingshot and can consistently hit a 5" target at 10-15 yards. Preferred ammo; 5/16" nuts.

I've a few hypothesies regarding some of the gun control legislation that has been passed in various countriessince the early 1900's, and some here know that I love a good conspiracy theory, so bear with me.
In Germany, they had complete prohibition and confiscation punishable by death (selectively) or jail and fines for non compliance, then not even 10 years later allowed to own and purchase guns, then another implemantation of strict licensing of each and every gun, then another disarming, then another round of guns for everybody.
To me, it seems like somebody in the gunmaking business probably had a friend or two in high political places. Get your friends in office to ban/confiscate all the guns and a few years later let people buy them again, wait a few years and repeat. Bit of a money grab at the least, for everybody involved, the MFR's, the government's processing fees for licenses and permits...
Same thing seems to be going on in the US, everytime there is a political change or somebody mentions the words 'gun control' weapons sales go up. A complete ban or confiscation of guns in the United States of America is very unlikely, as long as it remains the USofA and the constitution remains 'the constitution'...
As with other countries, all it will take is some psycho to open fire on a bunch of people in a crowded mall or school and people will cry out for more restrictions and more gun control. Its happened in the US and will happen again (unfortunately) whether contrived or not (believe what you like, just don't believe Fox or CNN or NBC, or ABC, BBC etc...). They will tell you what you need to hear to get their job done.
World Economy, World Trade, World Union, World Government, North American Union, European Union are some terms that come to mind. The people that control the money in the world make the decisions as to what goes on and what doesn't, and they do bad, bad things to get what they want.
/conspiracy theory out.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I'm picking up two Saiga semi auto shot guns tomorrow AKA street sweepers.
Better get ready guys there is a Dictator ship on the horizon and it wont be pretty.
He is all ready planing on forced labor across the country.
This will be my last attempt to "straighten out" what appears that you are taking out of context.
(Please note: I CAN NOT and WILL NOT even attempt to speak for TheNomad, or anyone else. I am giving MY OPINION and interpretation of what I read and compehended from TheNomad's post, quoted above!)
1. The thread was about buying what you (anyone) wanted NOW, before the President ELECT is inaugurated, BECAUSE he has gone on record as being ANTI-GUN! No. . . clarifying, here. . . VERY ANTI-GUN!
2. The man stated what ammunition that he has onhand. Period.
3. He stated what firearms that he was planning on picking up. Period.
4. His words state that there is a "Dictator ship" (mis-spelled, I dunno???) on the horizon and that it won't be pretty.
(I interpret that to be that Mr. Obama's feelings and beliefs and policies [which I do NOT agree with] are NOT going to be pretty.
5. Forced labor. I don't understand what the H-E-double hockey sticks that refers to!
So, In My Not So Humble Opinion, there is NO reference to violence, in any shape, fashion or manner.
Mr. Ship Boy, I personally believe that you are trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill (as my dear old Dad would say!)
Again, my interpretation is that TheNomad stated what ammunition he has picked up and what firearms he is picking up. Period.
You made a reference to "Assume". Break that word down. When you assume, you make an "a_ _" out of "u" and "me", so, don't assume.
Ask for a clarification.
Lastly, you would be SHOCKED if I told you what I own, LEGALLY (which is NOYDB)!!!!!!!!
I sincerely hope that this removes any doubt as to what my opinion is!
Maybe he was thinking about a 'sausage and potato boat'.

I know, I know...Nunya business!
Glossary of terms:
NFA = National Firearms Act
DD = Destructive Device
AOW = Any Other Weapon
SBS = Short Barreled Shotgun
SBR = Short Barreled Rifle
EBR = "Evil Black Rifle" (Term used for AR-15, etc., which I personally find to be amusing. There's NOTHING amusing about that fine platform!)
NOYDB = None Of Your (ahem insert word with similar spelling to Hoover Dam) "Danged" Business
Troll = Self explanatory
And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion, or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Barrack Obama
Today I started thinking about the future for America. There are millions of gun owners around the country who are dead set on keeping their guns no matter what. I have no idea how many would risk their lives for the right to bear arms- neither do any of you, until you are face to face with someone trying to strip your weapon from you. No need to argue the point. I began thinking about what I might do if the time ever came to have to give up the weapons. Well, it turns out that Virginia does not have a record of firearm sales. They do not require registration of the gun. I do not have to have a license to own my gun. Here are the laws for VA:
Question: What are the Gun Laws in Virginia?
Answer: Child Access Prevention Law? Yes.

Juvenile Possession Law? Yes.

Juvenile Sale/Transfer Law? Yes.

- Registration of handguns? No.
- Licensing of owners of handguns? No.

So, if they do begin making the rounds- house to house- to confiscate guns, I will tell them that I do not own a gun. What if that isn't good enough? I looked around my house and decided where I would be able to stash them. I have a couple of places in mind, none of which are a safe. I pray that the day never comes when the authorities find the need to search our homes for weapons, but you never know. I know that in Virginia, there are enough gun advocates that there might well be an uprising, should the need arise. I refuse to believe the worst about president-elect Obama. I hope that his anti-gun stance form his early days are simply effective ways to get some public attention (remember, he started small in Chicago, where guns are pretty hard to own)- a publicity stunt, if you will. I pray that his Chief of Staff will make him realize that he is playing with fire if he tries to tackle all the guns in the country. Besides, Obama will want to be president for a second term. It would be political suicide to take away the right to keep and bear arms. I'll hope for the best.... and prepare for the worst.
I'm thinking about my next gun now:

it's small, but even my wife could handle it, and it'll be easy to carry concealed. It goes for about $270- new.
