I'm using an E-350 van for work, 89 model. It's got 235/85/16's on it now. They are about 31 plus inches tall. The rims are 16X6 stock steel. Someone is giving me a set of 265/75/16's. They're tall enough and will fit in my wheel wells. Is a standard 6 inch wide rim too narrow? Should I go to a 7 or 8 inch wide rim? Thanks.
How wide are those tires? I don't know my metric conversions but if it's over 10" no way is that safe. Might be ok for a mustang with a more low profile tire but not for a truck. You risk popping the bead when making a high speed turn or safety manuver. You can drive on it ok, but anything more than 10" will be very risky, and I bet a tire shop won't even mount it.

Thanks Justin. I think your answer is correct...I was just kinda' hoping. The cross section is about 10 1/2 inches. I'm thinking I'd have to go to about an 8 inch rim. Oh well.........
Rule of thumb, width of rim plus 4" will give you the minimum. Like I have 11.5 inch wide tires on 7.5" wide rims. The manufacturer recommends nothing less than 8" on a 11.5" wide tire, but that .5" is ok, but nothing more. So if the tire is 10.5", you can have a rim anywhere from 7-9" wide.

My 01 F250 Super Duty came from the factory with Firestone Steeltex A/Ts that are LT265/75R16, load range E on factory aluminum 16x7 wheels. I just put a set of Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs that are LT285/75R16, load range D on factory steel 16X7 wheels for use on the beach. They look great. I am looking forward to trying them out next week.
Good Luck.
