my truck (82 f250) came with 16.5x8 rims with 33/12.5r16.5 tires. Since 16.5 are almost non existent i plan on changing them out. I have a 16x6 rim that fits the front but just barely clears the brakes. The tread separated on one of the fronts so i was going to change one at a time. Is there a tire that is as tall as a 33 but will fit on a 6 inch rim? is there a minimum clearance between the rim and brakes or as long as it turns it's ok?
I've always figured that as long as it turns freely it's OK.
As to width, general rule of thumb is that the tire section width (the width in the size designation of the tire) should be about 2" wider than the rim, although you can push that a bit. So a 6" rim should have about an 8" or a 205 mm wide tire. I'm not sure what's available in a 205, and as I said, you can push higher than that with the risk of a little worse tread wear and a little worse handling. But it's not like it goes to pot if you're 2.5" wider or anything. In fact a lot of people put 12.5" wide tires on 8" rims and claim it's fine (although I'm not advocating it)
Your tires will probably rub the front leaf springs if you use those narrow rims that are set to the inside of the truck with a wide tire. And if you get a tire that is too wide, the middle wears out before the edges of the tire.
Best rule of thumb; If you are going to use stock rims, use stock size or very near stock size tires. If you want large aftermarket tires, use aftermarket rims. It works so much better.
Problem solved. I had a 16x7 rim given to me and a slightly used 285/75r16 tire/mount/balance for $50. that should get me to work and back plenty safe till i can replace the rest to match. Thanks for all the comments!
