steering wheel repair .

ok doke guy's n gals i'm here long enough to try and pick your brains then back to work we go . i have the four spoke wheel off of the 63 one ton { not a 61 as i thought } and i plan on using it and it's factory turn signal switch on my 53 . already meausured the center and a new aniversary horn button insert will fit in nicely . well its cracked etc. like many of our wheels and was wondering what to use to fill and repair them on a permanent basis before painting it . it would seem that bondo would eventually crack and come out and i'm ol' fat and lazy , i only wanna do it once . so what we got ????

Eastwood also sells a kit. Many, however, insist it's absolutely not necessary to spend big bucks-inexpensive epoxy from your local hardware store being up to the task. Not sure which type/brand as I've not done that project.Someone with more knowledge should be along shortly.I believe I saw an article/tutorial with photos, maybe in our tech section,do a search.Steve

I repaired mine, and it turned out great. If you can find a place that sells fiberglass supplies or boat repair supplies, that's a good source for epoxy. there are different types and curing times - and these might vary withthe size of the cracks. Be sure you get epoxy resin and not polyester.

The epoxy I got hardened firm in about 30 minutes. that was good because you don't wnat it to be fluid and slop out all over the place.

What I did was wrap my cracks with some masking tape then inject the epoxy into the crack (through then under the masking tape) and let it dry. After that, it's a matter of finess filling and wet sanding until the surface is built up and smoothed out.

Then I painted the entire steering wheel with black epoxy appliance paint. You can get that at Home Depot. I think it's made by Rustoleum. Two coats is enough. Be sure to follow the instructions about dryin gtime between coats and spray it as thin as you can.

It turned out perfect, hasn't recracket, and you can't see the repairs at all. When you paint it be sure to mask off the inside of the horn button hole.

Good luck,
J!
