Cracked frame

I purchased an 06 F350 last week. It's a regular cab with a flatbed. I'm getting to know my truck better. I was crawling around underneath today and noticed that the frame has been cracked at some point. Both sides behind the front wheels. It looks like it was a very good repair. The cracks were welded and a plate has been installed on the inside of the frame on each side with very large rivets?? The plate extends probably 6-8 inches on each side of the crack. What are some problems I might encounter with a repair like this? The use for the truck will be with a 1000 lb plow on the front end and probably 500 lbs of ballast on the rear. From what I know of the history of this truck, it has had a plow on it for only one season. The motor was also replaced at the dealer a little over a year ago. They wouldn't cut the frame to replace a motor would they? I have some pics in the album listed as frame under my user info.

I believe what you are looking at is Ford's two piece frame. The front and rear sections are two separate pieces. The pieces are then joined by rivets, plates, and welding.

I just got a 06' F350 on Friday and the frame is the way. All the frames on the trucks I looked at were the same way as well. I also remember reading somewhere about the two piece frame.

You have nothing to worry about. This is not a repair, but a factory frame.

Well that makes me feel a little better. I just got rid of a Chevy that I had to have the frame beefed up to prevent it from cracking while plowing.

Frame issues were the reason I started looking for a new truck. The frame on my 89 F350 pretty much rotted away. The front half was good, back half was shot.

I hope we both get to enjoy our new 06' F350's for a long time to come.

My 04 regular cab has the same two piece frame. When I bought the truck used and got it home and saw the frame with the plate and welding my heart skipped a beat. I started checking other 250's with the same body style and they were all like that, so its normal to have the two piece frame set up. Good Luck with the new truck.

The chances of a repair shop using rivets (that aren't pop rivets) is very slim.
