i bought a 95 v8 4.6l tbird monday and it ran fine...it had a tick that went away and an engine code P0102 for the MAF...almost made it home and it died...got it to start at wot but it would knock real bad and it back fired...when it backfired the entire plastic air cleaner blew up into pieces...tried to start it today with a new air cleaner and used maf...same problem and only starts at wot and needs gas to stay alive at 1-2 rpms knocking bad...felt like the starter jammed so i cranked the engine by hand and it is getting hung up...it will almost make a full rev but it jams up and i hear it hit metal on the pside...i dont understand how it could have run so well...first i thought it was electrical but now it feels like a rod or valve...what should be the first thing i should do?
motor is completely seized now after i tried to start it to put it in the garage...crank wont budge at all and broke the bolt...is there any possiblity that the trans or starter could be locking it up?
i should be able to rotate the torque converter in neutral, right?
i didnt want to waste time taking the starter out (one bolt looks like a pita) but there is the torque converter plate cover or the rubber plug underneath i can easily get access to the flywheel
Pull some spark plugs and look for damage. If you find it, you'll be able to save pulling the starting until it's out of the car and on an engine stand.
No damage, go for the starter.
TC should turn from back of trans with engine off, might be hard to do. But keep in mind the front side isn't going to turn as that is connected to the flex plate and starter. There would be nothing to learn there, as this is clearly an engine issue, not trans.
i havent slept for over 24hrs so its hard to think...shouldnt the tc rotate in any gear?
Yes it will. And with the engine not running the trans is effecively in nuetral in every position. It needs the pump turning to generate pressure to engage any gear.
