According to "Consumer Reports" (Dec '08) 5 million Ford, Lincoln and Merc owners (out of 12 million) haven't had their cruise switch replaced yet. The article states Ford has issued multiple notifications but doesn't say whether people are ignoring them or aren't getting the notices due to moves. Hopefully, no more fires will occur before this recall is completed.
The actual fix only took about ten minutes, but it took two trips to get it done. The first trip they disconnected the cruise controll and then I had to wait a couple of months for the kit to come in so they could repair it.
When I FINALLY recieved my notice for my cruise control I called my nearest ford dealership in New Bern NC and every appointment they could give me were the ones when I could not leave work. they finally got me one when I could get my truck in and guess what they didnt have the fix it shtuff needed so I had to reschedual.
I ended up moving to Indiana and fell into the Ford dealership pit of hell and got the run around that I was now over the time limit, arrangements were made with a different dealer etc etc. But I could PAY to have it done. Ford was no help at all. My cruise control ended up non op anyway so I let it go.
So I guess I will just pay to have it done.

Which is why I simply bypassed that switch and went on with life....cruise works fine.
My wife has gotten multiple notices for her Escape, but she's not bothered to go get it fixed despite my constant reminders. I'm tired of being a PIA to her - the car is insured, so I'm just going make sure she is too, then I'm going shut my mouth...

Reminds me of my recall experience.
I had a recall on my 2005 F250 Gasser for a missing fuel line retaining clip. I call my local dealer and got the run around for two weeks trying to get an appointment. Finally left work one afternoon early and took it in. They looked at it and "verified" I needed the $2 part and told me to come back in a week when they got the $2 clip in. I about popped a gasket as when I was calling numerous times to get a scheduled appointment, the service advisor assured me the part was in stock.
Finally got a Saturday appointment and took it in for the recall work. The service advisor that was doing the weekend duty kept entering my VIN in wrong and telling me that I did not need the recall and was not applicable to me even though I was shoving the recall notice and parts order in his face. By this time I am really steaming and the guy is threatening to call the cops on me. At this time I reached over the service advisors desk and snatched his computer keyboard and entered my VIN correctly for him and BINGO, there it appeared for all his glory that I was right the whole time.
The recall was done and within 20 minutes I was on my way never to return to that dealer. Found a rural dealer that was 15 extra miles out of the way to give my business to.
Find somebody that can put an inline fuse in the power wire going to the cruise switch on the master cylinder. The correct wire is a constant hot 12v key off. I had changed out the switch for a new one before the dealer got his hands on my van. I had it in the shop for something else and they installed the recall mandated wiring harness without telling me. Then I get a letter months later informing me that the harness they installed was improperly manufactured. I corrected the wiring myself and now have the fuse in the correct wire.
