This summer I was faced with the common issue of the spring in the cupholder breaking off and not being able to open the cupholder. i took it out and glued it back up and that worked for a while until the heat melted the glue again.
I didn't want to keep taking it out and re-gluing once or twice a year. So I came up with a more permanent plan. I drilled two small holes outside of the holes in the spring and through the back plastic on the cupholder. Where I placed these holes to the left and right of the latch mechanism. There's not a lot of space there but you can fit in a small machine screw and I used nuts with nylon bushing inserts to keep it tight.
Just wanted to share with anyone who might be having trouble keeping the spring attached.
Great idea!
I have got mine out now and will make the repair tomorrow. I am also tired of gluing it every 6 months or so. Do you know what size screws you used?
I used 6-32 machine screws. They fit no problem but one side where I got the whole a little sideways I didn't have room for the washer. Also, a dremel with one of them flexible shaft deals would work best. I used a right angle drill and it was still to big to fit behind the slide rails and metal backing plate.
about 2 weeks ago i finally tackled the broken off spring problem (i have a 2003), so since this was the what 6th+ model year one would think this problem would have been corrected by the time my year was built...anyway, i drilled small holes into the plastic housing and used short sheetmetal screws...works great and is a lot more stout..
