I recently got a F250 2wd SD with the 5.4 and the 5 speed auto tourqe shift tranny. Here are my questions
1) what does tourqe shift even mean? is it just another name for a transmission?
2) what filters, if any, does it for the fluid and when should I change them or leave it to a transmission shop?
3)does this tranny have a thermostat because the temp guage shows a pretty consistant temp no matter what I do. if its city or highway, if im towing or not, seems to stay pretty consistant.
any other general info you have on it would be great
1. "TorqShift" is just the name of the newer 5 speed automatic transmission.
2. I change all my own fluids because i want the job done right, i enjoy doing it, and it saves me a few dollors. This trans also has a remote filter, 17.5 qt fluid change.
3. Like most automatic transmissions the fluid is controlled by a thermostat.
the trans gauge is not a tru gauge as it only moves after it is to late. This is why people add gauges to their vehicles. The same is for the oil pressure and water temp gauges. the only gauge on the ford dash that is actually a gauge is the boost gauge.
I change my own trans oil and filter. I buy my stuff at the stealership and pay the premium for their trans oil, but I know its the right stuff. You dont want to put the wrong AFT in this thing, bad things could happen.
And, you will really like the trans once you start using it to tow with.
how about is the tourqe converters on these trucks any good? It tows fine (only have had 2-3k lbs towing) and idles great in drive, however out of the hole if the pedal is to the floor, the engine spins like heck and pulses power to the wheel, almost like some one is pushing a clutch pedal (on a standard) in and out. does it at high and low speeds. I have to back off the gas a bit and then you feel the engine catch as you are pushed into your seat.
I had the dealer change the TorqShift trans fluid/filter and the transfer case fluid for $250. It is a very crazy price, but here is why: I was told by a couple of friends that were mechanics (i do admit they are not Ford mechanics, but general auto mechanics) that they both heard that the dealer somehow pumps all the fluid out of the torque converter or has some way of cycling all the old fluid/dirt out. Honestly, I really dont know what to believe but I figured 'safe then sorry'.
Its true. To get ALL the fluid out, the tranny fluid has to be 170-180 degrees before the thermostat in the torque converter will let the fluid in there go. Ford has a heated flush machine that gets all the fluid out and leaves you with completely new fluid.
