I have a 99 F250, 5.4, Auto, 4x4, standard cab with 45,000 miles on it. When I accelerate moderately froma dead stop in Drive, 1st , or 2nd there is a strange "thud" in the driveline. It doesnt really make any noise, but you can feel it like there is slack in the drive line. It happens about 10 feet or so from a dead stop. I have checked the U-joints and drive shaft and they appear ok. It has done this for 10-15,000 miles and appears to be getting worse. It kinda feels like gas sloshing in the tank? Any suggestions?
The front of the driveshaft that slides into the transfer case is a splined shaft. The inside of that shaft needs lubrication and gets dried out. Pull the driveshaft out and apply some teflon grease into the splined section on the driveshaft. It will take care of it for a while but will probably come back. My truck did this so I replaced the splined unit on the driveshaft, and it still does it on occasion to this day. The grease helps though!!
Thanks fordmerc, It does seem like that's the problem, I know I have had it before with my bronco. I started to pull out the driveshaft and trans fluid ran out. Wouldnt that keep the splines lubed up?
You would think so, but it doesn't get into that splined area when it is installed. The fluid coming out is trans fluid but it is from the transfer case. So if you let it leak for a while, ck the transfer case level not the transmission.
