Hi everyone,
Newbie here with a lot of problems. Any help would be appreciated.
97 f-150 XLT Scab 4.6 4x4 78,000 miles. After pulling my boat home from the lake, 15 miles, I pull in the driveway and a warning bell sounds. 4beep intervals. My ABS light comes on, ebrake light comes on, 4X4 wouldn't engage and my battery is almost instantly drained. Battery is 3 months old. I was running the a/c max, and the radio was playing. Outside temp was in the high 80s or low 90s. Electrical ? If anybody has a guess please feel free to throw it out there, because I am at a loss. Thanks
I had a similar problem with a 2001 4.6 and it turned out to be an alternator fuse. It wasn't apparent that the fuse had blown either. I think it was a bad fuse to begin with. Replaced it and everything went back to normal. Good luck!
I'd also suspect alt/battery. Charge the battery and start the truck. Now measure to see what kind of volts you get at the battery posts, you should get 13.8V or higher if the Alt. is charging. You can also measure the battery before you charge it and see what it has, should be right around 12V with everything off.
Thanks for the imput, sorry it has taken so long for me to update. However, the problem is still there. 2 batteries, 3 altenators, 3 different shops, big money and problem still exists. The truck will run, start fine for a few weeks and one day I will stop at a store for 5 mins or so and the truck will be dead as a hammer. I know sometimes these issues can be hard to locate and repair, but if anyone out there has had similar problems please let me know what was done. Thanks again.
Hey builder123, yes when it is dead, nothing works, no lights, radio, windows, nothing. Just like if you where to pull the battery out. Which is exactly what I have to do in order to get it home. Pull the battery, charge it and put it back it. Thanks
If his battery is dead (new battery) and he has to recharge it for it to work I would suspect the cables are making contact. If my assumptions are correct,
1. He has checked or the shops have checked the charging system for proper charging voltage and checked the regulator, replaced the alt I can only assume they check the cables.
2. The problem started after pulling the boat.
I'm thinking it is an intermittent short maybe in the electrical circuit for the trailer.
I would also just change the alt fuse in the box as it is easy and just part of the process of elimination, cheap too.
Some more info: for anyone wondering the 20 amp fuse for the alternator that is inline is located directly under the main fusible links for the batter. these are located on the passinger side of the firewall under a cover. teh fuse is under another cover below the fusible links. This info is for a 97 truck.
When I was having intermittent charging problems with my 94 SHO a couple of years ago, I picked up a voltmeter that plugs into the cigar lighter. red, yellow, green LEDs and a digital voltage display. About $15 at WalMart.
This helped me identify WHEN the battery was not being charged and eventually, in my case, led me to an intermittent alternator.
I still keep the little gadget handy and use it whenever I have a suspected charging problem to give me a snapshot of what is going on.
GEM Module. It turns the lamp indicators on in your cluster. Sounds like two problems at once. talk about bad timing. Check the wiring at the trailer plug for a short. It happens alot. this will drain the battery. The Gem module will kick on the abs lamp and controls the function between you 4x4 swithch and the 4wd shift motor. this also controls your wiper intervals wich stil may be working. I work for a ford dealer. your not the first this has happened to. good luck
