Drove my '08 Lariat FX4 6.4 Diesel on the Interstate yesterday for a short trip and was able to get some accurate and interesting mileage.
On the first leg, I was averaging 16.7 mpg for about the first 50 miles. Then the "cleaning exhaust" light came on and stayed on for about 15 minutes. When it went off, the mpg had dropped to 15.4.
I then reset the mpg indicator on the dash and started again. For the next 75 miles or so, I averaged 17.9 mpg. Then I had a little city driving and we dropped back down to 16.4. On the way home, it inched back up to 17.0 mpg for the trip - this would be from the time I reset it after the exhaust cleaning. So, overall, I would estimate about 17-18 mpg in true interstate driving.
My truck has the FX4 offroad package and a 3.73 rear. How does this compare with others?
That is about what I am getting too. Keeping the RPM's below 2K and easy on the boost results in the best mileage. These Diesel's take a while to break in so be patient. I average 13-14 city and 16-18 hwy and around 10-11 towing my trailer. But I only have 3600 miles on mine so I still am not broke in either.

My truck has ten times the mileage yours has. The break-in period has not improved my mileage enough to notice. You are right about 2K RPM and low turbo boost, however.

Besides getting better milage, why should, do you keep it at or under 2K RPM?
And is it that important to keep it easy on the turbo? I 'm asking because I just drive the truck. I never give the RPM'S or the turbo boost any thought. Should I be??

Keeping the RPM's down and low boost will give you the best results for MPG. That would be the only reason to do that. Sometimes I do just to see how much I can squeeze out of it.
Do yourself a favor and manually calculate your mileage based on actual miles driven & fuel used.
My built in mpg feature doesn't always work all that accurately. MIne will tell me I'm getting 17 mpg or better but the truth is closer to 16 or under.
I have an '08 250 SD Harley, crew cab, long bed, 4x4, 6.4 diesel.
Good luck.
Not saying your Dash is wrong but you I would be curious to see the actual numerbers from guys claiming these high numbers.... I have the small tank and I used to get 350KM's with about 80-85 litres of fuel... now I use about the same amount of fuel and get 425 km's on the Hwy... but some of the exhaust pieces fell off... also add 8-10% for the tires. BTW I live in Canada and the terrain is not flat here which makes a huge difference in these trucks.
The dash is sometimes close if I never reset it. but can be wrong if you reset it or drive differently, I only use it as a guide just like the distance until empty Mine will acutlly say 650 KM's till empty LOL I wish!!
The dash meter can be close, but used fuel and actual miles driven is a better way to check,I have 04 4x4 6sp 3.73 33''goodyears aired up to 50 psi and empty I will get 21 mpg @ 65mph , aired up to 80psi loaded with 40' weekend warrior with jeep and 2 bikes 100gallons water 60 gallons fuel loaded weight in on scales @ 22500lbs will get 13 mpg @60mph,with 5th wheel no toys just food gross lbs 15600lbs will get 15-16 mpg not bad for pulling big shoe box down the hiway.Mods that I have done that make a huge differance have been the B-D engine brake the 4'' magnaflow pipes, Edge A-2,with attatude and GPS was a big jump in milage and power, just driving around town stop and go traffic I see 16 mpg .What every one is saying about keeping rpms @2000 or less ,keeping boost down and if you have a vacume gauge and keep it out of red you will see better milage .I love this truck,I have lucked out with 6.0,just put oil and fuel in it,still have oem brakes @ 75000 miles .
Thanks Larry. Thats what I am getting too. I read it again and I was off by the numbers but it is still not 10 times the mileage which I figured you were exaggerating anyway. Thanks again.
