it will shift in to 4 hi (manual) no problem. When I try to go in to 4 lo it grinds real bad. Then going from nuetral back to 4 hi it will grind again. Is this normal, I know it dosent have syncros so some grinding is normal, but im just not sure if I should try to force it in to 4 lo or not.
Going to 4 LO should be done with the truck stopped or less than 3 mph. Otherwise, grinding isn't something that should be happening. Electronic or manual?
Hmmm, that is rather odd. You might check the shift linkage for wear or excess play which could be keeping things from moving as precisely as they once did. Otherwise, a stretched t-case chain can cause the kind of issues you are describing but requires quite a bit more down-time and dollars to repair. And although I doubt I need to mention it, check oil level in the case as well. Dry or sticky internals can be temperamental too.
downtime, wont be that much of a problem, its not my daily driver, but the funding part may be. Ill crawk under it tommorow when theres daylight and check the linkage, and fluid levels.
I think I figured out my transfercase problem. I crawled under the Bronco this morning and soaked the linkage in WD-40, then ran it through the gears several times with the truck shut off. Then I started it, and ran it through the gears, no more grinding. Know I can get it in to 4 lo, but it wont stay in it will pop out. I think it needs to ge used some more, or adjusted a wee bit.
If you shift in to park rather than neatral, you may have better luck. A automatic will spin the inturnals in neatral, if you let it. As long as the wheels are stoped, it cant turn. Try running the truck in neatral while the truck is jacked up and you will see what I mean. From 4hi to 2hi (or back) theres no problem because the wheels are stoped. But when you go to neatral in the transfer case and the trans is in neatral, there is no link to the wheels. So the trans starts spining. When you try to go to 4hi or 4 low you will get grinding. If you shift to park at this time, you will also get grinding. (of the park key) As long as you stop the trans (park) you can shift no problem. Now if you shift fast, you may get through the transfer case neatral and back in gear before the trans starts spining. One of the few benifits of the electric shift is it has a magnetic clutch that will match the speed of the case to the trans before letting it shift in. I hope this is understandable.
