Question Spot lights?

I'm thinking about installing a original style spotlight on my 12 volt 1955 panel truck. Seeing that it's all original I thought it might be neat and I remember the one on my 56 was a blast. I wondered if anyone else has them and what brand they have and number series it is? I have a old Unity H-1 that is in pretty good shape and I believe still would light up with a 12volt bulb. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated.

Hi Dylan,

I have spots on my 51 which has been converted to 12 volt as well. I actually have 4 lights. Two are "5 inch" and two are "6 inch" all are made by Unity. I only have two mounted and bought the other two at a swap meet because they were cheap and I know you can easily swap out just the light portion on them in about 2 minutes. I wasn't quite sure I was going to like the bigger ones so I got the smaller ones just in case.

Both 6 and 12 volt bulbs are readily available for under $20 in both sizes. The 12 volt bulb number for your 5" Unity H1 is: GE-4405 or U-H7604 (halogen - from Unity). For the 6" Unity S6, it is GE-H7635 (Halogen).

They are relatively simple mechanically with all the power being run along contact point type connections allowing full spin. They do come with varying lengths of shaft though. For our trucks 12" is the most common.

If you have all the parts then you are in like Flynn. Despite different shaft lengths, basically all the lights are the same. Whats different is the mounting bracket that attaches to your windshiled stancheon. You have to make sure you have the right one for your vehicle. And if you need to buy one they are expensive. That little chrome bracket is over $75. For a 48-52 truck the mounting bracket number/Kit is #66. And of course they have "left" and "right" stancheon moumts That number is cast in the bottom of the bracket. Not sure about 53-55 being a different bracket, but 56 will definately be different. You can call Unity to find out. They are available from C&G and other after market parts houses, and also from Unity on there web site:

Features of 250-U-I Series

The folks at Unity are very good about providing information, and if you need it, I have the exploded drawing of the entire spotlight assembly with part numbers. The pattern for drilling and the jig for drilling usually come with the new mounting bracket. They are peculiar to the # of the bracket and vehicle. But the patterns are all over the net and I have mine I'll mail you a copy of if you need it.

Here's a few pictures of mine. If you need any more info or particulars, I'll check in here from time to time.

Pardon the annotations I did that for sun visor measurements on another post.

Call me if ya need me!

Julie!

Julie,

You need to take your truck to the dentist, it has two many teeth in its mouth!

Thanks Petey - I'm getting there.

I wish the clown up at the chome shop would get my stuff done (including the stainless windshield trim) so I could pop the glass out and get the cab primed!

Only been up there 11 months now.

PS (kidding)
PPS. In an effort to be able to return my truck to 100% stock, I have a second front grille. It has the three teeth. When I restored them both, I brazed the bolts into the back of the headlight housings and rewired them both the same (quick disconnect plugs). I hold them on the truck with wing nuts and a lock washer behind the windbreak, and can swap them out in about 5 minutes!
