Any ideas on how to take care of a squirrel that is digging through my trash? I have no interest in live traps or anything like that. I was thinking something along the lines of anti-freeze, but how do I make it appealing to him?
Mothballs, works like a charm. They did 800.00$ worth of damage to the wiring on my 04 ranger. It would set alot in the winter as I worked construction and would get laid off. After it was repaired, I poured mothballs in the feet of pantyhose, cut them off and tied them. I placed them in a couple different places a round the engine compartment and no more squirrel problems. They stored thier nuts on the engines and ripped out the hood liner to make a nest, they chewed up any wires that were in the way of there nest building, the " little rasicals"!!!
I would personally use a pellet rifle, 22, or shotgun depending on your location. Because the poisons and what not would be readily available to dogs, cats, etc. But if you really want to use anti-freeze, they claim that it has a sweet taste and smell to it to animals, so they are naturally attracted to it.
Antifreeze ain't the way to go. Either plug him quick (as recommended by jwshobe) or else re-think the way you are handling your trash. You should keep in mind that, if one squirrel has figured out where he can get some quick and easy munchies, then more are almost sure to follow.
I use my Gamo pellet gun. It shoots at 1200fps so it makes great kills on the furry little pest. I bet I killed 50 this yr so far to keep them out of my garden. My gun is very quiet so my neighbors never hear me shoot. I set in my back door & shoot them.
I have the same problem, only with coons getting in my trash. I've taken out 5 so far this year. The problem is that I am in a residential neighborhood, but thankfully outside city limits. I use a .22 bolt-action with subsonic .22 lead hollow points. I think my pellet gun makes more noise. The combo of hollow points, lots of trees around and subsonic (low speed) helps keep the risk of ricochets to a minimum.
