I need some information on a tail swap on a T5. I've got a T5 from a 90 mustang and I found a tail section from a 92 S10 T5. The guy is letting it go for a pretty good price since he used the front section and doesn't need the tail section. He says the tail has an electronic speedo and my mustang T5 has a mechanical speedo.
Is there anyway to make this work or will this be more trouble than it may be worth?? Any advice on this would be appreciated.
I may have missed it somewhere...but what engine are you putting it behind?
This is a T-5 behind a y-block in a 58 F-100 and a bench seat. He made his own shifter, but it clears in his fine with what is supposed to be the stock ford tailshaft.
Are the cabs that different from the cab on yours or mine?
Common "lore" has it that the shifter comes up under the seat unless you swap to the S-10 extension housing. I've often wondered about that and judging by your photo that is not completely correct, at least on 57-60 models.
The picture does bring to mind 2 questions, however:
1) Is it a stock seat? Looks like it but I'm not sure.
2) Is there an adapter plate between the transmission and bell housing?
Sorry I forgot to put that im putting this behind a 351w in a 54 F100. The guy selling it only wants $30 for the tail section which seems like a pretty good price.

Thanks for the information.

I am aware of the "lore" around here as well at least with our trucks. A stock floor shifter would not work. They go almost straight up which would definitely be into the seat.
I can answer question one. That is the stock seat in his truck.
I am not sure how his is attached to the Y-block.
Here is one in a 61-66 that with a stock T-5 and a y-block. Bench in place (floor portion of shifter), home made shifter arm.
He is using the modified bell housing from mummerts.
Again...I do not know if the later cabs are deeper or where the engine might be mounted.
I have yet to see a stock T-5 mounted in one of ours. I would love to see one mocked up at least to see where it sits. That would prove the "lore". I am sure somone has tried it...I just have never found a pic of it anywhere.
It's not exactly the same situation as yours, but I believe the solution is similar. Can you post pics of the electronic speedo tailshaft and sender?
PS -- as stated in that article, you need to get the shifter assembly from the S-10 too!!
I don't have the tail section yet. I found a guy who is selling it but I haven't bought it since I wasn't sure if it would work. I'm finding a lot of info on the net that leads me to believe it is doable but most of it is different from one site to the next. I am pretty sure it is doable though. I may just go ahead and check out how much of the tail section this guy has and if it is complete I'll just buy it. He only wants $30 for it so that's at least not too bad. He bought the T5 for the front section and he doesn't need the tail so I may just get it and see what I can do. It is frustrating trying to figure this out. What stinks is that before I decided to go with the T5 I saw a few on craigslist going for next to nothing now all the ones I see are from Mustangs and going for big bucks
Thanks Brian_B, Great information. Looks like it will fit. On the other hand with the shifter moved forward in the S-10 location it would be in just about the same position as stock. Graft on an original floor shifter handle and no one would even realize you had a 5 speed.
lowtrkn2k: From what I've read, the speedo drive location is unuseable in the electronic extension housing but it can be modified to fit with the older, mechanical speedo housing. So with the housing you are contemplating, you might not have a speedo. Perhaps someone who has actually made the S-10 conversion can chime in.
I think I may just wait and keep looking for what I really need and save myself the agravation. One good thing is I have a lot of information to tackle this swap once I get the right tail section. Thanks to everyone for all the input. Keep it coming if anyone has any other ideas.
Well I have the T5 behind a 302 and it comes out right before the seat, it is a 60 Ford cab and I used a Hurst shifter works out great the shifter came out in the middle of the seam of the transmission cover. It is very comfortable and easy to shift.

I have a T5 and 5.0L out of an '89 Mustang in my '56. It's still a work in progress but simply by turning the stock shifter around mine is right where it needs to be. Only 2 bolts hold it on and you can simply bolt it on backwards. If I can post the pics you'll see. It's a stock bench seat however my engine is mounted a couple inches forward of where I should have put it. Electric fan is pretty close to the oversize radiator. If ya need anymore pics let me know. The T5 seems to have worked out perfect for me. Whew, can't figure out how to insert pics. I'll put them in my gallery if you'd like to see em.
This is at least the link to a pic of my shifter. It's in my gallery though. Hope it helps ya.https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...201609.520.390[URL="http://https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/tmp/201/201609.520.390"]
Dee, that looks pretty good. I guess you have some really long arms though...haha...sorry I couldn't resist. I'm going to pick up my T5 sometime this week. I may hold off on looking for the S10 tail section after seeing these posts especially since I haven't decieded for sure if I will go bench or buckets yet.
