It is time to clean and re-oil my AFE filter and I went looking for an AFE Recharge kit at a Truck accessories place, they didn't have the AFE kit but had the K&N kit. They told me it is the same stuff. I am sure it is pretty close but want to know what everyone thinks about using the K&N recharge kit on an AFE filter? The guy also told me I could use WD-40, that it is the same thing. I think he is full of it but has anyone heard of this before? Also is there anyone out there using something other than the recharge kit to clean and oil their filters? Would simple green or something similar work for cleaning the filter so I could just get the oil? Thoughts and comments on this?
I don't know about the AFE filter but i would think the K-N cleaning kit would be ok, don't think WD-40 would be my first choice. I got a S-B filter with the cleaning kit. Others will chime in AL good luck..
Did you check one of the sponsors that sells afe kits to see if they had a cleaning kit?
I haven't checked the sponsors because I know I can find it local. I am just curious if the guy I talked to knows what he is talking about or if he is full of it? I have a K&N kit at home and looked to see if I could find out what is in it and there is nothing on the can about what is in it. I thought that manufacturers were mandated to put what is in their product on the can? I am also very sceptical about using the WD-40 I am just curious if anyone else has heard of that or if someone uses something besides the AFE renew kit for cleaning and oiling?
i just get a bucket warm/hot water and use dish soap (you can use the k&n cleaning part w/the soap)that is what i use to do at the last shop that worked @ and still do it to mine . The afe spray is just blue anyway while k&n is red. big deal??? JUST GO LIGHTLY ON THE SPRAY THAT IS MOST PEOPLE'S PROBLEM to much spray is the cause of problems.O yea then just let it sit overnight just me tho
The thing i,m thinking about is what Texas Outlaw said about the different filter media. It may be thinker or thinner and might just need the recommended cleaning kit, just my .3 cents.

I have already cleaned the filter with the K&N cleaner and I know just a nice even coat of oil and let it soak in to the media. What problems have you seen with too much oil?

I am not sure what the difference between the filter media is but I know there is a difference. I just want to find out if the oils are the same for both of them or if they are different besides just the color?

This a quote from Jeremy (jtharvey) from a post a few days ago: "Basically, you just spray a 2"-3" wide swath of it, all the way around one end of the filter, then let that oil wick into the rest of the filter overnight. Check it in the morning and touch up any spots that are still completely stark white. What you don't want to do, is spray the whole element -- like what many others, including myself, were used to doing with other filter brands, such as K&N, used in the past on other vehicles that required the whole element to be sprayed. Not so with the AFE. It doesn't take a whole lot of oil for the AFE to do its job. "
This is what he was told by AFE to do.
I just bought a filter and oil kit direct from afe..... great service and quick delivery, even helped me figure out what the %^&* I had to get the right part. what can I say, the thing was there when I bought the truck.
I just want to find out if the oils are the same for both of them or if they are different besides just the color?
The filter oil itself is the same for the different medias. Only difference is the color, to help identify the different filters, if someone has more than one and they aren't marked at all.

Thank you Jeremy and Rolland. This answers my question and good info on how to oil it. I would have done the whole filter without this info.
