I have been looking at all the different CAI options out there. I called my local Ford dealer and he filled me in on some stuff. He stated that he has dyno'd a rig with a Spartan tuner but installed different CAI's (AFE, K&N, True Flow and Volant) for the dyno. He says the dyno showed the Volant provided the most hp. He said is was well built also, and hasn't seen any codes thrown....It appears that the filter media is similar, if not the same, to AFE.
I have read all the threads about AFE versus S&B CAI's, the codes being thrown and all the good stuff about increased mpg and throttler response.
Just wondering if anybody has a Volant CAI installed, and if so, has there been any issues. After looking around the internet, the Volant is more expensive than the others listed. Just wondering if the extra cash is worthe it....
its my understanding that S&B and the banks are the only ones you can run without a tuner because the others throw codes. If you tune the truck it doesn't matter which one you get its all about personal preference. i run the s&b my buddy has the afe i really dont know anyone personally with the volant.
Since the original Ford filter design is already a CAI design, I'm using the drop-in filter from Green Filter USA and love it... much cheaper then a new full CAI but you keep the FM looks.. http://www.greenfilterusa.com/
It's an "oil" filter. It runs without codes and with race tunes... or stock..
I bought it from dfuser.
If you are going to get the Volant, I think it comes with that scoop that runs to the front of the truck. It listed for 1000 bucks in a magazine the other day. That is crazy for an intake. Lots of people are running the S&B intake with great results and it costs 265 bucks.
I am not partial to any one of the CAI kits as I have heard good and bad about all of them. I have not heard much about the Volant and the dealer was pretty "hip" to them for some reason, just wondering why.
I looked around and found the Volant kit for $523.00, which is still very pricy. I looked at some of the past threads on the Powerstroke forums and there wasn't much info on the Volants over there either.
It appears that have been some past problems with the S&B box "warping" due to the heat under the hood and some are having a tough time getting the lid back on after cleaning the filter, but it still appears the most utilized set-up in both forums (not knocking the AFE, I ran one in my 7.3L). I believe the codes issues with the AFE has been "cured" once a tuner is installed, so both seem like a good option....
Still wondering why nobody has much info on this Volant kit and the dealer said this is the one to go with. He doesn't sell them either.....
I dont have significant time behind the wheel with a Volant so I cant really say anything good or bad about it. I think the reason you are having issues finding info on it is because no one is willing to spend $500+ on an intake these days. What I can tell you is the S&B system is worth every penny. There is a definite increase in throttle response and mid range power, not to mention some extra turbo whistle. For a tick under $270 shipped to your door, it cant be beat.
thats right. i really like my s&b. only thing is you have to disasemble half of the intake to clean the filter properly, it isn't designed to just remove the clear cover and get the filter out i think thats y they are having problems. i dont really see the volant giving 2x's the results so i dont see it being worth 2x's the price. S&B is fairly cheap and can be installed easily in 30 mins.
with or without a diff filter the stock intake is only rated for 400 hp.
Strange, but perhaps dfuser can comment here since he's running the spartan 310 with the green drop-in filter without any issues. Or perhaps you could PM him

Yeah, it does take a little longer to get it out, but its not a big deal really. I always suggest that customers get the WF-1022 filter sock for the intake to extend the cleaning interval by keeping big particles out.
