I personally keep my likes and dislikes to myself, like I may disagree with lifting or lowering your truck, but it's yours so do with it what U want, you know............anyway, welcome, hope you don't feel too offended with us here.........but you did 'sort of' start off on the wrong foot...............there are loads of knowledgeable people on this forum, I hope you can ask questions, get answers and help from there Ford-intellegence
trust me im not offended, i mean i did start off wrong, i didnt really think about what i was posting. but anyway whats done is done.
Boy this thread went to pot pretty quick. Some of you guys really need to research what makes a truck a CS and a SCS. Apples and freakin oranges! As to the OP if you truley have a 79 F-350 4x4 then you will have nothing but troubles and you should sell it to me before it falls apart on you. Seriously...I will hop on a plane and take it off your hands and save you all kinds of headaches.
hey guys whats going on, im pete and this will be my first ford. i generally hate fords because i think there crappy trucks and cars, but the old fords are the only ones i would trust, plus they look badass. ill be picking up a 79 f350 ranger xlt. maybe a camper special. it has an 8ft bed too. engine is a 400 paired with a 4speed, dont know which one. its got some rot but not bad for a ny truck and it only has 90,000 miles. i will also be the 3rd owner.
now my question is, whats a good tune up for this motor? i mean i know the basics but is there anything special you need to do or maybe change something sooner than later. all it really needs right now is a rebuild on the carb and what i would suggest a full tune up. but thats all it needs. cosmetically the trucks not in that great of shape but nothing a little work cant fix. now for some pics. i only have 2 atm but will have more this weekend.
The 400 motor has gotten a lot of bad press over the years, most of it undeserving. Ford tried to do something with an old school motor that just didn't work very well. The best thing that can be done for the 400 is to upgrade the cam and timing setup. And while you have it torn that far down you might as well add an aluminum intake, 600-650 cfm 4 barrel and a good set of long tube headers. Run 2 1/2" duals out the back with a good set of mufflers and you will not believe how the engine will perform. As far as your transmission is concerned, if reverse is over and down, then it's a New Process 435. If reverse is over and up, then it's a T-18. Hope this gets you started.

yea? ill sell it for 3 grand. when are you coming?
and gary i think its a new process 435, since it has a new process transfer case. i would think they go hand in hand. and although that sounds great to make this truck really come alive i wont do that. maybe just an exhaust and a rochester 4bbl carb. its not worth dumping that kind of cash and investment into that motor, when i really want a diesel. so when this baby goes hopefully next year. hello detroit diesel!
Im not sure if you realize it yet but a 79 F-350 SuperCab 4x4 is sorta the "Holy Grail" when it comes to these trucks. That truck has the highest GVWR of all the 73-79's 4x4's with a few special exceptions. 3 grand really isnt a bad price but it would be even more special if it was an auto and Lariat. Does it have a tilt column? There are guys that have spent years looking for something like this. Heck your front axle is worth a 750 to a grand by itself. Thats definitely a truck that worth restoring. Personally I would build a 460 for it and add an OD 5 speed tranny or if you really want diesel go with a Cummins. A lot of guys have swapped those in so theres a lot of good info out there for what you would need.

wow didnt realize this truck is so rare. im not sure about the tilt column ill check it this weekend and ill put up a bunch of pics to show you guys. hell if this truck is worth something ill deff put in some worthwhile work into it. im usually a believer in keeping the original equipment in a older car or truck, so we will see what i decide to do with the engine. id rather keep everything original though.
Ben, a SuperCamperSpecial is a 73-76 F350 CamperSpecial. in 78-79 a F350 is only a CS. FoMoCo dropped the Super. Bill said they did this because people thought they were getting a Supercab CS.
Ben, you said you searched and a thread of mine came up. what was the name of the thread?
m78, remember that you have a 78 F250. so it's a F250 CS instead of a F350 CS with the 140" wb. also your's is a supercab. I not sure if your's would classify as a CS in this category or not.
Pete, if you do keep it original, the previous threads will help you get the most out of that 400. If you decide to keep the 400, check out the 335 series engine forum for the info on the 400 youd need.
By the way... i was going to put a 460 in my truck when my 400 died, i thought it was on its last leg 5 years ago, its still running as good as ever... So, now when it dies, its being replaced by another 400. For the cost just to get my truck setup to accept a 460 properly, i can build a complete 400.
yea i agree, but its costly. i was going to fix the rot and prep the truck myself and have my friend paint it for free. all i would do is pay for the supplies.

i hope i got alot out of this motor seems strong. plus if i do swap it im going diesel i dont think its worth the hassel if just getting a bigger gas motor to suck even more fuel.
I would keep as close to the original tutone as you can. That silver color was almost as shinny as chrome when it was new and against the maroon it looks real nice. Check the galleries to see if anyone else has that combo.
Good idea to think diesel pete, sure as hell get more MPG .....what was it someone said 8MPG for gas vs 20MPG for a diesel ... nice difference for your wallet if you ask me --- I'm going diesel when I can afford to convert mine.........2.7 Liter twin-turbo-diesel engine and tranny from a 2005+ X-type Jaguar is what I'm thinking ---less than £2000
no no your misunderstanding, i hate ford drivers, they seem to give a bad name to fords, and the powerstroke engine is not made my ford. it is a navistar engine and i think it sucks. just because i hate the powerstroke does not mean i hate the ford truck. and fmc400, i agree that it will better with the camper off, but i will keep it, sounds like i might need it in the future for any reason.
Theres nothing that bad about powerstrokes,i happen to prefer the cummins personally, but ive also owned a lot of International vehicles, and ive had good luck with them......probably the worst reputation among American made diesels would be the GM 5.7 liter engine that GM built in the late 70's....Now its the Ford drivers that are at fault?
With all due respect,do you cruise the various vehicle enthusiast sites, and start your posts by declaring that those particular brands and there drivers arent any good?
It seems like everytime you dig yourself out of the last hole you fell into, you manage to find a new one?
First the brand sucks, then you back pedal, and its only the newer ones that suck, then another backpedal, and its the powerstrokes that really suck, now you veer sideways, and the drivers suck........ what are you attempting to accomplish here?
Go easy on Pete. Maybe with his new truck he will see the light. We should be trying to lead him away from the dark side and lead him to the light. Anyone who shows an interest in these old trucks is ok with me....at least till they talk about lowering them haha
